1. God quenched in blessed Egypt a dwelling
Wherein He decreed the gathering of kindred souls

2. A place for honeyed conversation, its meeting
Dearer to the thirsty than fresh, sweet water

3. And true, upright friends whose affection is straight
Better than the intimate who only brings blame

4. With them we enjoyed some days of life
Manners refined over the tradition of drink

5. More gentle and delightful than a lover's discontent
Sweeter than a beloved's rebuke on wakefulness

6. Where you see us turn our faces
But not turn our cares towards gain

7. Life may be generous with abundant bounty
Yet days are quick to despoil

8. Never does the joy of one cease
Whose true affection stays fast in union and separation
