By a mount worn out by the journey, lacking strength,

١. ومستحلم بخشى اللحاق وقد تلا
به مبطيء قد مَنَّه الجريُ فاتر

2. Its limbs all loose-jointed as if they were ropes
Braiding and hampering its slow pace.

٢. ضعيف القوى رخو العظام كأنّها
حبالٌ نضته مبطئات مَحامُر

3. Its knee joints seem
As though vultures' talons had hammered them in.

٣. عَلى صَلَوَيه مرهفات كأنها
قوادم دلَّتها نسورٌ نواشِر

4. The tribe held back from it until it was as though
Amid weaklings a lion ambled halting, subdued.

٤. فنهنهت عنه القوم حتّى كانّما
حَبا دُونَه ليثٌ بخفَان خادِرُ

5. Damn you, ragamuffin Abu Shiblyn, what a sight!
A day dark with pouring rain on Dajan's expanse

٥. شتيم أبو شبلين اخضل مَتْنهُ
من الدَّجن يومٌ ذو أهاضيب ماطِر

6. While cranes floating above it intone their elegy-As though united in grieving for what they look down on:
Loving companions parted from their Saalim, now left

٦. تَظَلُّ تغنيه الغرانيق فوقه
أَباءٌ وغيلٌ فوقَهُ متآصِرُ

7. With no more than grief that none remains to console.

٧. مُحِبَا كاحباب السَّليم وما به
سِوى أَسَفٍ ألاَ يَرى من يُساوِرُ
