1. God watered Egypt, its people left it lightly
And what remains throughout time?

2. Had I been there when its sanctuary was violated
I would have died nobly or found excuse

3. It was ravaged, and I could do naught but weep
My tears reproach the torment in my breast

4. We turned away its people as they departed
The horses of invaders massed at the bridge

5. Would one fear death's shadow? For we have worn
Patience's armor through sorrow and loss

6. Though death is bitter, with remembrance made sweet
Let us mix its draught with prayers and reflection

7. No gift to man equals a noble death
Freeing from earthly woes with dignity intact
