1. I was kept awake by lightning whose glow knew no respite
With sparks that flew and a night whose lover lay sleeping
١. أَرِقتُ لِبَرقٍ لا يُفَتِّرُ لامِعُه
بِشُهبِ الرُّبى وَاللَيلُ قَد نامَ هاجِعُه
2. Kept awake was I though my companions slept
Its flashes enthralled me, came one after another
٢. أَرِقتُ لَهُ مِن بَعدِ ما نامَ صُحبَتي
وَأَعجَبَني إيماضُهُ وَتَتَابُعُه
3. Patiently lighting the clouds as if it were
A melody of yearning played by the nostalgic
٣. يُضيءُ صَبيراً مِن سَحابٍ كَأَنَّهُ
هِجانٌ أَرَنَّت لِلحَنينِ نَوازِعُه
4. Happy is the mother of Bakhtari, quenched by it
Though distant is he, cut off by the rope of estrangement
٤. هَنيئاً لِأُمِّ البَختَرِيِّ الرِوى بِهِ
وَإِن أَنهَجَ الحَبلُ الَّذي النَأيُ قاطِعُهُ
5. The reviler has surely slandered to separate us
That the rope binding us may be severed, lost its course
٥. لَقَد جَعَلَ المُستَبضِعُ الغُشَّ بَينَنا
لِيَصرِمَ حَبلَينا تَجُزُ بِضائِعُه
6. Not even a meadow with streams flowing under the trees
As sweet as the day she said: “Do you mend ties or break them?”
٦. فَما سَرحَةٌ تَجري الجَداوِل تَحتَها
بِمُطَّرِدِ القيعانِ عَذبٍ يَنابِعُه
٧. بِأَحسَنَ مِنها يَومَ قالَت بِذي الغَضا
أَتَرعى جَديدَ الحَبلِ أَم أَنتَ قاطِعُه
