And if my heart were inclined to perseverance

Upon my throat until my tears have borne their burdens

And my heart has descents in the incline of calamity

21. Sorrows beyond count in tribulations are intersections
Upon me, like the oaths of allies that do not dissolve

23. It has possessed my heart, blaming it while glorying
And if it were other than this tragedy departed or exceeded

24. I would have called it back repeatedly before reaching it
"You have hamstrung my camel, Imru al-Qais, so descend"

26. The arrows of sorrow—this is my heart, so unleash them
And in my pain after Hussein, delight

27. And quench your thirst and mine from my tears and bereavement
And my tears, beware of holding back, take refuge

28. And do not distance me from your wings, O adorned one

29. When lightning bolts travel with them, it stumbles
I am reminded among them of Karbala, so I moan

30. Ghadeer, who cannot fathom how it comes to mind
I have instilled in her what I harbored for the beloved

31. So I distracted her from the one with hanging amulets

32. My profound grief plays in the field of my chest, wandering
Loitering with that tear, accomplished

33. And sorrow from my heart centers
So the utmost of this sadness is that it is partial

34. With a piece, with a piece, that has not changed among us

35. My condolences in the night of my loss have erred
And my vigilance turns to the roses of tears

36. And my heart has pitfalls in the incline of worries
Sorrows beyond number in tribulations are crossings

Oh Karbala, and the sorrow that owns me

To disobey upon the judgment of misguidance and kill

46. Oh their tragedy's strong resolve and the like of it will
With your arrows in the enclosures of a killed heart

Who unleashed upon Hussein's chest his sharp blades

49. Prepared for the day of judgement, drink its bitterness
Then what escape is there for you from the dispute of Fatima?

50. I do not see that the blindness will uncover from you

51. I disavow a heart that delighted in
As the family of the Messenger of God were engulfed in evil

52. Whenever they sought affection, they were reproached
The family of war, in the sanctuary of Mina

53. Fed by the dripping of water, still unpure

54. My staunch spirit bearing the head, oh woe to whoever disobeyed
And left Hussein broken in the ground

55. That they may attain with the son of Harb disentanglement
As if the staff were the head of Hussein upon a staff

56. A beacon for an ascetic's sunset, tested

57. My heart, compose poetry though do not criticize
And oh my tears, melt, but do not burst

58. And oh my vigilance, be replenished from my good sleep
For the life of my sorrows upon it will not be reduced

59. Nor is my heart from its passions released

60. The tragedy of Hussein a capital of calamities
Do not be covetous in soliciting my heart

61. And deafen my hearing to the arrow of reproach
I was bereaved by one turning away from grief

62. Advisor upon his disgrace, still hopeful

63. To God from a servant who aggressed upon the master
So he left him under the hooves, tossed about

64. Calling upon the Messenger of God in the tumult of chaos
Save me from an aggressor whose tyranny has exceeded

65. Who has afflicted me with all kinds of worries to test me

66. Lo, it is a day impending upon the beloved
By which relations were denied to the son of the Messenger

67. And a heart was complicit therein, withered
It called upon the darkness of injustice, and the throat was trembling

68. Oh lengthy night, oh lengthy night, unveil!

69. Oh guide of the chosen one, my skin is torn
By the oppression of a people overcome by ignorance

70. And how can hearts incline today or have sympathy
When the hearts of enemies at the stance of preaching are withheld?

71. Like the frozen boulder the torrent struck and carried from atop

72. Oh community of tyranny, why do you have no perception?
What is the use of building the house if the foundation crumbles?

73. Do you hope for a sunrise when the sun has set?
And the filth has slipped away from your religion

74. As the clear water slipped in the stopping place

75. You have watered, and the grandson among you thirsted
So you quenched him wrongfully with the blood of slaughter

76. Oh how much malice in your chests has spread!
You have enticed the cutting blade to linger

77. Upon the neck of a blind man among the tribe, confused
#

78. God has decreed the killing of that radiant moon
So a malignant moth shook the coalition of prohibition

79. The hair of Hussein in the resting place fluttered about
You see the blood in those forelocks resembling

80. The dye of henna in grayed hair, tested

The remnants of my ribs turn upon the embers of fury

82. And my tears water the heat of my chest but do not quench
It is the way of tragedy for the weak to overcome the strong

83. And the people of sin to descend upon the people of piety
The descent of the Yemeni, the blamer, loaded

So I have cast away a heart beyond patience, barren

85. Bearing from departure of passion what it bore
With no victorious helper against the injustice of Karbala

86. Though I have tears that when they flow
Trickle upon the cheeks in streams of hail

For your like, from a tragedy I have disobeyed my consolation

88. And I have given the reins to my laments to weep
So if I bemoaned a towering mountain in Yemen

89. It would pour forth tears to shame the clouds, raining down
Sending down succor from it at every stop

I will take on the ages love for the family of Ali

91. And recite their elegies at every assembly
Perhaps on the day of reward their grandfather will extend to me

92. With forgiving my sins, the comfort of the bountiful
So I attain mercy from the King Most High
