1. If only hearts could unite as one
So that the agony of love be felt by all

2. Why does the heart crave without reciprocation?
And youth face trials without aid?

3. I've grown weary of complaining while passion burns me
Oh how distant is the goal of this sleepless worshipper!

4. I've misled a heart that yearns to find its core
Who can heal the longing of the bereft lover?

5. The slanderers have forbidden my tears to flow
My eye protests, rigid, its pupil faded

6. Had they but heard the elegy of my sorrow
They'd have blamed even the witness among them

7. I complain to you - would you be cross
If I, oh Healer, sought refuge in your care?

8. When I sleep you haunt me with images
Angry at the specter of memories awoken

9. As for sleep, if only health it would bring
Your ailing observer would not remain awake

10. I yearn for the branches though the morning breeze pines
The wind's passion stirs the supple boughs

11. The storms' flashes stir me though the sky is clear
Lightning in my eyes midst gentle rain

12. Youth blamed me at dawn for my excess
But chide not the bereft for their deep longing

13. The turns of fate persist in limiting my aspirations
Until I turned my goals toward the noble ones

14. And when pilgrims to kings hurry forth
I head to Jamil al-Din, my destination

15. May the injustice of events know
That I shine like a flaming meteor

16. My determination proceeds though without firmness
For the sword is but strength in the arm that wields it

17. Remaining by the touchstone of time and its trial
And proven right by the tester's examination

18. You will meet him exalted yet humble
So the purpose matches the intent

19. And when his right hand draws near one in need
You can hardly tell the giver from the taker

20. Hope for the confessor, doom for the transgressor
And law for the newcomer

21. His ideas are weapons - when he shoots
I make his target my farthest destination

22. By his command the opportunists act
Not by the order of one whose rule is past

23. Think not that I alone sing his praises
Far from it! Many extol glorious Mohammed

24. You who stole the glory of the exalted
For the proudest boast is to exalt the sublime

25. Your pens articulate the best that's available
And all they wrote flowed with insights and virtues

26. From every fair or dark-lipped man of words
Mouths of white, mouths of black origins

27. His battalions rout battalions in their blaze
Fire facing the submitter and the defiant

28. Many a guardian has he invested with authority
Binding the banner's leadership by his decree

29. Until when the enemy takes his path
Toward places of ambush and treachery

30. I gather the fruits of this speech like one wandering
To spend the night trapped in its coils

31. This eloquence does not empower your pardon
Except by the utmost exertion of effort

32. I have seen your rule pillaged on both flanks
And you were the first to fend off the pillagers

33. You nurtured the treasury like a man
Who attends it with a father's affection

34. You made your soul despair of probity from it
And tasked yourself to battle it with force

35. Thus the Sultan's realms, once prey for all
Became, after being the target of hunters

36. Supported by your hand, the efforts leaned toward you
Looking to the world through the ascetic's eyes

37. Glories turned their help toward you
Long celebrated by the bard

38. Glory resides on the throne of eternity
An ambition takes wing on the wings of high aspiration

39. And an elevation through which wide distances are spanned
For elevation is secured by the envious one's spite

40. Blessed is the passion you have conjured in me
And resolve emulating the leader's pace

41. I am a meadow adorned with every unfamiliar bloom
My ingenious works - none vie with my inventions

42. When want drives me, or love of the sublime afflicts me
I come to drink at my watering holes

43. And when I count in your company my means to you
I number my intent among my noblest aims

44. Until in praising you I regain my strength
As if bestowed with some of your finest necklaces

45. My hopes did not once betray my promised meeting
For good faith in you has always been my guide
