1. Abu Amr, I have a soul and you have a soul
Each longing for the other and stirred

2. And a heart, whenever faced with patience
Met armies of passion supplied by armies

3. And a heart that strayed from me, I know not
Whether its haven was al-Jazirah or Sharysh

4. Except my soul takes wing toward you
On the wings of passion and yearning as feathers

5. As if grief never lodged as companions with us
Whose environs beasts of prey encroach

6. And he who rejoiced our joy for us has a resting place
Over our heads from it are canopies

7. And youth has feathered the wing of my companionship
Where the wing of none else feathers

8. So wondrous are the days in showing
Ease to us while our hands gather

9. Verily, yours is sincere affection
Prevailing, wise, never reckless

10. Its spirit mingled in love with my spirit
So I know not in which of them I live
