1. The glances of eyes and the frown of eyebrows,
As if lightning constantly wings through the night,

2. The specter of imagination went to and fro, both,
Wishing the night were a single strike.

3. And in my bed I conceal from them
And pierce through the darkness of those glooms,

4. I met none but a free soul contending with it
The stars of dusk between rising and setting.

5. Determined, no terror should concur,
With it a creed, and death has various creeds.

6. To you, the son of Hamdeen, though far the distance,
And though one of the wests has estranged me from you.

7. The freshness of love not made turbid
By the passing of nights or the crowds of defects.

8. And the memory of it may be a shake
Repelling every insolent critic.

9. With the sign that passion was never close
And my steps in it are not close.

10. Leaving behind those means after
We tightened their bows with piercing stars.

11. And many a morning I had in your approval and serenity
On a path of dutifulness, no swerving.

12. Nights the wicked walked not between us
With what almost deceived the purest of dispositions.

13. And they did not shake
With long intrigue they nurtured and faults.

14. And days when the guide did not point passion
To whispers that blamed with no blamer.

15. Is it not now when I was a resolute suitor
And it pleased you that I came, truthful repenting,

16. And naught remains but a whim which devils mount
Fearing pelting from every side,

17. You neglected my rights or the rights of my love
So count them a marvel among marvels.

18. And you aggrieved me alive with lamenters whenever
They remember me, bringing joy unlike lamenters.

19. And the enemy said, the night of despair bent
Over its dispatch, I am Iyas son of Nashib.

20. So do not boast of me in the breasts of councils
Where you hid me, or the breasts of caravans.

21. And I became, my enemy fears not my might’s violence,
Nor does my companion hope for my bounty.

22. And the rabble do not come to meet me as though
They braced for abundant rain pouring down.

23. Nor do I pass on to the progeny of every
Pliancy, with the hands of youths, my resolve and claws.

24. I blame indulgence and blame obedience,
And suffice you of blamer and blamed.

25. I admit my sin though my poetry necessitates no
Exalting you, even if I supported it with stars.

26. But it is what I can, and refuge
To your merit, save wiping my sin coming close.

27. And the envious deny, you sealed them
Based on a witness of what you chose or absent.

28. And they stood against one whose distinction they knew
Through themselves or through the false suspicions.

29. Wroth with one who denied the days amongst them
When they knew him between consenting and wrothing.

30. Hastening to the worldly life and wherever it appeared to them
Even if between wild beasts and perils.

31. If a man earns no more than money alone
Then miserable is the earning of the earner.

32. I wonder at one who knew not the earth its due estimation
And went astray in appraising the piercing stars.

33. And one who did not prepare himself for afflictions
When he plunged exposing himself to afflictions.

34. Reconsider them and their sanctities
And if they reconsider not the consequences.

35. And be closer to guidance than them
Let this be one of your marvellous highs.

36. Maybe they and varying days
And your glory is worthier of rising ranks.

37. Those worries turned away seeking
The lower goal and no other seeking.

38. Steadfast dispositions perhaps withered and withered
Suhail though it is not fading.

39. And a people knew that it hurls towards them
Between what inclines to you and opposes.

40. And they extended hands in surrender and purged
The consciences of falsified purpose and trials.

41. And lighter than a subjugated against his soul’s command
Among the people is one who fears no vanquisher.

42. To you, the son of Hamdeen, the advice of a concerned one
Which came apart during those afflictions.

43. Despite me and despite favors, ropes were cut
At the hands of decisive incidents.

44. And despite men who taught them their sins
To beware enemies and scorn misfortunes.

45. They spent their love save for useless sorrow
Over something of their command, not something gone.

46. When honored they pour out tears seeking refuge
As if the streaming tears were stars.

47. So if you avenge them, then I excuse a taker
And if you care for them, then I thank a companion.
