1. I wish you were not happy
Or a peacemaker, rather than a corrupter

2. I used to talk much about you from my perspective
So I multiplied your many enemies

3. He slandered while presenting himself as a guide
Do not send an oppressor to be guided

4. He has betrayed the covenant of love
It is not right for a traitor to make a pact

5. Another than I, Abu Al-Alwan, complains of love
Lamenting passion today and tomorrow as well

6. Yearning for Taibah from Babylon
Oh how near is yearning, and how far!

7. O knight of glory, he wants from me
Deliver my messages to the nobles

8. Oh how I cherish the memories even if
After you they kept me awake and tearful

9. Do not be influenced to divide us
Perhaps a meeting will return to us

10. In Al-Ghor there is a house, and in Najd passion
Oh longing for one who took shelter

11. My peace was not on the day I left you
Oh peace, bearer of smoothness

12. I disciplined my heart to patience
Though the heart was not disciplined

13. The days did not bring me close to their justice
So I encountered tyranny, shunned

14. He who knows restful life will deny
His life embittered

15. Wonders stranger than I hate
That I complain of them, and envy

16. I wish the world that cannot be seen
Had no lineage or birth for me

17. They sufficed for me, or would that they
Were all for Al-Hussain the sacrifice

18. For the peerless full moon - what angel
In the horizon rivals the full moon?

19. The good man does not account his wealth
Unless it helps him at need

20. And the richest to them was who
Remained the poorest of hand

21. The fair-minded, when he complains
Of the darkness, his view turns black

22. The rider of the sand dune did not stand
Straight on its back but slid

23. The suitor of glory, when dark clouds
Covered the stars he could not be guided

24. It was not the custom of any sharp swordsman among you
To remain sheathed without being drawn

25. And God did not decree for any master
His decree but that He chose a master

26. Whether they began and completed, or fell short
Whether they did good or cast down a building

27. As if he was suckled on sin’s teat
Or a youth whose wisdom was innate

28. Your light was not dimmed, O full moons
The full moon is not diminished when increased

29. Nor did your absence in its normal course
Prevent the fasting or festivities

30. Early fruits of soft rain, emulating
In protecting it your marks in the dew

31. Clarifying to minds your stature
In valleys accustomed to beauty

32. Remaining over ages despite the speed of meteors
In its terrain the vast reach of earth

33. Repetition renews it
And words create when repeated
