1. How much the resolute lamented,
And the abandoned despaired, O Hajar!

2. Do I praise the good old days in their life,
While the present is blamed after them?

3. Or was the day of parting—God forbid—
The first thing without a last?

4. Hearts created to be gentle,
Softened by both friend and foe.

5. They hardened against separation, though deemed
Steadfast, and among them a deserter.

6. It's time for the forgetful to remember
Something, so what's your excuse, O rememberer?

7. Doesn't longing shake a compassion,
Or doesn't this enchanting homeland pull?

8. How the promising procrastinates with false hopes,
While the onlooker awaits.

9. When the bones are cracked, when
Will a splint help if the breaker fails?

10. Don't leave the threshed in your captivity,
He'll leave some feathers, he's a bird.

11. O killer of his protection,
May He who unravels mend it.

12. Accept from the giver and be content with
What his essence shows, though his interior conceals.

13. Don't uncover what he hides from you,
The shy concealer, the veiled coverer.

14. Consult luck before consulting opinion
And taking the initiative.

15. Exert yourself with resolve, for the resolute
Often stumbles and resolve rights him.

16. You're fortunate the likes of her are guarantee
You’re the winner and conqueror in her.

17. The negligent forgot from his slumber
What your sleepless eye kept guarding.

18. After you, her ignorant ones took her,
The unwilling escaped her.

19. Her mistakes disciplined her for you,
Though many with purpose made her go astray.

20. Who will water her if rain doesn’t
Help the barren land that bore nothing?

21. You or one of you men, while people
Are useless, failing, and disappointing.

22. Don't entrust her, she’s prone to sin,
Called for are Sattam or Aamer.

23. Either a crescent of you appears to her
Or a bright star shines.

24. O rider of elements, carried by
A flood whose currents are abundant.

25. Smooth, running on smooth, its echo
Quenching its loud, gushing flow.

26. It winds without any hoof scraping it
Or voice stopping its course.

27. Outstripping the whip that doesn't
Spur it on or voice that reins it in.

28. When gusts of wind tore at the ships
Above it, its raging storm ripped their planks.

29. It competes with the Tigris' Qatool
Heading from it to the sea.

30. It waters the meadow of generosity where
Shade gathered and fresh leaves sprouted.

31. And where the running water settled
And the wandering moon paused.

32. Say to the minister of ministers you were
Subsequent to, that negligent procrastinator.

33. Yearning hollowed my heart so no
Visitor or pilgrim escapes me.

34. Every empty desert consumed me, unsatisfied
By milk or slaughter.

35. Gulping me down though its gaping
Mouth didn't relish my flesh.

36. Every day a squeezing fetter
Pinches, under it withers.

37. I call So-and-so but have no
Helper to answer my call.

38. I dwelled watching my house’s drought while in
Another, lively spring overflowed.

39. Who thirsts in Najd while Tihama’s
Snake slithers pulling its rope?

40. O honorable religion, may my dead
Merit revive when you glance it.

41. O best guided to his door
Perplexed, ridden by the perplexed.

42. Circling burdened her extremely
With the skin it bequeathed, durable.

43. It left her like Al-Mu’aththara
Left the durable built.

44. They never saw before you a house for
A companion or fire for a night chat.

45. Until God fulfilled their destiny
With you, all abundantly.

46. So they flourished in ample livelihood
Where vast hopes can dwell.

47. Above the land for the lofty
None remains but you, no sight or hearing.

48. The land was barren but since
You were born it's the infertile rendered fertile.

49. Scholars unanimously concurred
You're in it the evident, shining miracle.

50. If an astrologer gained prestige
Your cutting sword disproved him.

51. Or counsel was pretense for
The slow, your present perception exposed it.

52. If you took crop and bosoms, still
Destiny insists, the commander.

53. Or people came incapacitated
You're the newcomer and dispatcher.

54. How tomorrow the differing of spears is seen
And the singing of shields, O vanquished.

55. The regretful will return, reclaiming
Habits the forgiving accustomized.

56. God, whether you accept or resent,
Predestined, for He is All-Knowing, Able.

57. That glory is the home of security, its
Rising sun this untainted lineage.

59. Until pride ended at a summit
None can ascend without falling.

60. He competed in glory, so it
Shot him, for him there's no gambler.

61. God ordained his leadership
The matter, and this revolving sphere.

62. However much it inclines to others
It bows low returning to him.

63. O wearer of boons that keep
Overflowing over me.

64. My fresh water source when pages
Are folded and feet digitigrade.

65. Nine months of my exile passed—
Far from you to make it ten!

66. This though poetry never fell short
Or diverted from its grateful habit.

67. I have none but your kindness
A treasure stowed by the storer.

68. The valley dried so no son of
Night visitor or morning remains.

69. Were you to visit the intents, strings
The knitter knit would greet you.

70. Visitors conveying to your honor
The visitor’s finest gift.

71. In every inhabited, abandoned, absent
Abode, discourse of you is present.

72. On celebratory days they display
What the sweet-scented displays.

73. They touch them between your days
Thoughts that thoughts follow.

74. Their justification is your exclusion,
Though at your doors they're frank.

75. Witnessing I loyally guard you
If the traitor stirs or breaks pact.

76. Pride completed for them that you're
The praised and I am the praiser.
