1. Your horses are far away in Saffa,
While your neighbor in Adham harbors enmity.

2. Your luck with your friend is that you see him
As an enemy in your love for those you oppose.

3. Many a brother of pure descent within him
Is a solace away from your brother of birth.

4. So let not the fair tongues delude you,
Their essence is predatory livers.

5. Live either with a loyal brother
Trustworthy of the unseen, or live alone.

6. For after my experience of a matter
I forgot and will not delude you by my solitude.

7. The ways of days want to deceive
To anger me against my nature and habit.

8. Misfortunes wink at me thinking
I am soft toward their rigid sorrows.

9. How the bending of honored spears is not
Because I carry more patience than my heart.

10. Nights in their changes
Alienate me with every dawn that cries.

11. When I say "Enough," they stop provoking me
Then rise with multiplying afflictions.

12. The fat of misfortunes feeds on my thinness
As if their righteousness is my corruption.

13. One day in reserve from a friend
Another day in reserve from my birth.

14. Some blame sleeping without vigilance
And I said to my slumber to ignore them.

15. Wealth is but little
If sustenance is given only by my striving.

16. I frowned at a laughing woman's strange poetry
Yet it flowed smoother than my leading.

17. She counts my grays, wondering at my whiteness,
And I wonder, if she knew my darkness.

18. Each safe day diminishes
As worries increasingly grow.

19. Parting from a restless friend
Disturbs my tears and pillow.

20. After him, days lower my voice
Against my tongue and lessen my pillar.

21. I stand but do not stand for a farewell,
And he departs without provision from me.

22. As if when we were created for cordiality
We were created for separation and distances.

23. Your morals have maintained my covenant with you
They are more dutiful to it than compacts.

24. A time has been restored to me by you
Bountiful, with fulfilled purpose.

25. It has afflicted the goodness of my living in it
So I have rewarded it by forsaking rest.

26. Do not assume, and your thinking of me is good,
Remains for me, and you are an attainment of my purpose.

27. Nor that the blackness of my eye delights me
With what I have been compensated for this blackness.

28. How can the house of glory shelter me
When you do not, nor does the club of virtue gather me?

29. If I show patience or do not show patience to return
To skin I did not carry linen.

30. So my ribs forget sickness
And my eyelids ignore pillows.

31. I and between us, if our inclination is long
Or the expanse of the Tigris, which is a valley.

32. When my passion tossed your abode
It would not satisfy save my travel.

33. How so when between us is a separation
Whose length mocks the necks of steeds?

34. And the interceptor of the island and the marshes
Shining from afar in the dunes.

35. Caravans of black camels from water
Whose successive riders stretch across the vales.

36. When the nights are luminous
Their rider gropes in the ruins.

37. For them the hissing winds guide
And the meandering waters a calm guide.

38. When they shrink on the waves, they tear
At the intestines or tear my heart.

39. Can I see you and you see me
And do I have the equipment or supplies for that?

40. I will wait for time, which will someday
Extend the hand of a friend to a foe.

41. After you we thirst, anguished and longing,
As the land was nourished by you and dried up.

42. Perhaps Muhammad was remembered favorably
Seeing me forgetful in this belief.

43. And God will bring together by rapprochement
The little of Qanat according to the extent of divergence.

44. The matter I most hoped for
Is your and my dependence on God.

45. So do not be lost, and may you not lose
An intimate whenever the distances count you among them.

46. May you be visited by generous women
Who have assumed gathering companionship, it is said in Baghdad,

47. Lamenters in condolence and empathy,
Lovers for congratulations and gifts,

48. Rising in the darkness of worry like moons,
Like the rise of benefactors or hands.

49. When they drag their trains gracefully,
A resident and nomad are adorned.

50. For you they loudly clank their armor
And against enemies act like armored warriors,

51. They have nurtured, O family of Job, and settled
My nurture through you in the way of eternity.

52. Is there a man who guides if you are absent
To a faithful man or steed?

53. Who has taken the virtues apart from you
Like one who has taken meteors from Ziyad?
