1. Walking between incline and plateau
Speak in a canal and speak in bleeding

2. On every branch, youth’s fruits
With whom did my poems pick ripe bunches?

3. And the wonder of beauty is that the sincere
None can carry its burden lightly

4. My friend, what news and sights
Among its tresses and earrings?

5. Ask him, for beauty is his name
And its meaning corrupts the chaste

6. Was it an Arab woman under the darkness
Stirring that fanciful imagination?

7. Did her eye wander or her likeness so
It would expose my sleep among the guests?

8. Yes, and the memory of the days of youth called
My heart will meet it with frail loyalty

9. For the family of Ali, time’s circumstances
Have unleashed my tongue to blame circumstances

10. My condolences from afar to their home
Condolences of a friend losing a friend

11. And my friend is none but the grieving
For the day of Husain and the deeply anguished

12. He is the branch that used to hide
In Karbala, stirred by a raging wind

13. Killed by it, the grudges of souls flared up
As a wound flares from the scrape of claws

14. With every hand yesterday they pledged allegiance to him
And today they extended to him confederate hands

15. They forgot his grandfather after a recent covenant
And his birth despite a noble right

16. So they flew to him bearing hypocrisy
With wings - betrayal whistles through their fluttering

17. It pains me that death ascended
To a lofty, towering mountain above me

18. And that cheek - so stunning and radiant
Brandished while facing the sun expired

19. I curse the one who strove
With that despicable and vile one

20. Woe to the mother of their commanded one if he had obeyed
He would have sold his paradise for something worthless

21. And even if they defend you, for you are the Imam
And your father despite the hostile

22. For who is the verse’s fulfillment the day of the Jews?
And who is the cave companion the day of the arid east wind?

23. And who gathered religion on the day of Badr
And Uhud by the separation of those rows?

24. And for God demolished their idols
Before watching eyes laden with hatred

25. Other than your father, the Imam of guidance
The shining lamp, the resolute warrior

26. A sword was unsheathed to stain you
It blackened faces of swords out of dishonor

27. The shining water passed over you
And my skin ached from the impact of droplets

28. I endure your tremendous absence
My frail body’s limbs, this weak one

29. And my fervor for you, the news of the informant
That you cool the heat of the scorching

30. I spread you, for as long as visitors carried
The mother of musk mixed with dust from the battleclouds

31. As if your tomb is the garden’s flower
Upon which the autumn breeze blew

32. I love you as long as a pilgrim strove
And a lover swayed in fervor

33. And if I am from Persia, the elite
Cling affectionately to the noble

34. I rode against those hostile to you
And corrupt your preference through obstinacy

35. Of those who praised you before me I have not picked
The difficulty of composing it artfully

36. It pours from others’ loins
And their ankles slide smoothly in succession
