1. Be content in your estrangement, for the home country is a home
The mounts have been relieved of their saddles, for the climate is hot

2. Ask not providence about what it drags along
Fearing ruin, though safety is a disgrace

3. If security does not agree with it in the remoteness of its home
Then take risks with it, for high aspirations are hazardous

4. I see my camels disobey the leaders as though
Their halters under the ropes are virgins

5. Rubbing off the touch of disgrace are their necks
As if harm is a reason for them to flee in fright

6. They sniff the rough water from the vessels of their people
And refuse the soft water even if it were a sea

7. Since they knew meekness is humiliation
In their muzzles is aversion from being led with docility

8. Others have the fresh milk of their udders and their meat
As well as the profit from their fat and the gifts of their young

9. When the water of injustice mixed in them they no longer
Became the mounts of the barrens though they are barrens

10. Unless their decorated necks compete
There are Asses that bemoan the separation of companions

11. The thorns beneath their hooves raise dust in profusion
While the brows of the jealous boil with rage

12. As if the whips tear out ships from among them
While the mirage is an ocean

13. My abode is in Al-Zawra and it is a beloved one
Staying with injustice is a loss for the glorious and a disgrace

14. How often a shabby garment that I loved
And another I hated though it was worn

15. In others there was the glory that once
Brought it pride in its nearness and honor

16. When a land carries the dust of degradation
The generous person has no rest in it

17. How often have I mounted a startled she-camel
And with it solved problems while it was covered in darkness

18. One advanced in years I lulled his eyes to sleep
Closing his eyelids in compassion though he resisted

19. He awoke while I called to him from the intoxication of wine
And dizziness from it circled in his eyes

20. I fulfilled his utmost generosity though he disliked it
And the patron had no choice with me

21. By night I hosted the dawn beneath its wings
And it gathered them and no rain dispersed them

22. I attacked him, rousing him with my vision
Light penetrating the darkness of midnight

23. A man of supreme chastity I made him see
While he slept soundly and the string was straight

24. He did not suspect me while I mounted a pillow
With a flaw and no gown witnessed against me

25. Rhyming lines whose course I facilitated
Stumbling for those who recite though unblemished

26. Fresh as the words that contained no
Indecent meaning and had no freshness

27. When merits race each other to rise from my mouth
They scatter and no dust clings to them

28. A group criticizes me when I am alone with my jesting
Though they are noisy, desiring yet unable to attain

29. There is no flaw that I jest while alone and they fatten
When I am serious and they are envious

30. You do not see bodies as frail
Except for palms, while the souls are great

31. I conceal myself though my light is latent in my contentment
Not all that veils the crescent is concealment

32. How can I ward off sleep fearing scarcity
While I have the provisions of the minister as a neighbor

33. How excellent are his gifts if my fate envies
His care for the free from the touch of disgrace

34. If the supporter of the kingdom made me an obstacle
Then I have no need for the blood of days

35. My submission when I grasp the edges of his rope
Is strength, and without him I am lost and confused

36. May God water the palms of his achievements
Branches whose fruits are the durra of the seas

37. And may He greet at the zenith, despite the stars
Secrets I have confided to the faithful as a beacon

38. Sustenance appears transparent behind his smile
As the lightning's gleam reveals the rain’s procession

39. And joy in the kingdom expands
The right hand of life even if the left resists

40. If pride in this group flew to the utmost height
Beyond the sky they would fly

41. O son of the king, the world in the water of its youth
And its days are juicy berries, small

42. Tents at its edges marked with decoration
For them in the heavens of glory are dwellings

43. Truthful ministry, ever renewing
Counting glory as pumping blood and carpenters

44. In the evening its freshness breathes upon it
When homes are aired the balconies open

45. Its insight splits the buds of affairs
An insight whose secrets of the unseen are public

46. When it casts its glances, a gown and shirt shine
Near to gather, sweet to the hands of the chaste

47. And most fecund between the barren
When it appears to the eye, joy appears in its cheerfulness

48. And awe is given to its reverence and dignity
Then its mouth waters when passion is displayed

49. And the nostril despairs when it is denied
May God protect its throne which your care shields

50. And for the ambitious its limit is a barrier
The opponents sleep regarding it and its

51. Secrets are exposed to sights though veiled
You stood by it while the sharp swords were like

52. Eagles above the yolks of the armored host
If the edge of the sword failed you in defending it

53. Your truthfulness that does not disappoint would suffice
Unleash the two palms of your hands that the enemies may drown

54. Take oath by your name and your name is fire
Do not meet the day of commotion except armed

55. With your truth if the lions and beasts gather
For the wound of the sword inevitably has

56. Its own raging and the wounds of warriors are unstoppable
God has decreed for the envious of your kingdom that they

57. Are fuel and that wrath from you is the spark
So their tongues from rage are downpours

58. While their livers behind the ribs are embers
They gossiped cautiously fearing their discourse may be revealed

59. For between any two regarding you is a secret
They blamed the stars of fortune ignorantly though

60. The spheres revolve wherever you turn them
Your feet halt the lions as if

61. Your side is glory not to be touched
They are too shy to resist rights as if

62. Your veil from excessive modesty is a headcover
Answer the call, O minister, that has not

63. Been frequently answered though often repeated
The hearths of my passion call you in longing

64. My heart, my heated breath, the burning coals
I pretend with the gloaters fearing their rebuke and my apparent

65. Coolness to the hidden fire within me
How long will absence enervate my back and how long will

66. My side at the embers of separation find rest
Because of the distance between us I appear stretched

67. Like leather or only borrowed clothes
I wish days that disturb me with your nearness

68. Would depart like the leaving of intoxication
My craving for you almost makes me fly

69. Can a lightweight bird fly in the sky?
A people were emboldened by you to disparage me

70. So they looted your accounts and envied
They did not know the extent of your kindness toward me

71. So I have loss and harm from them
If they withheld the water you gave me to drink

72. Then from where are my meadows watered and settled?
They knew your gift cannot be reclaimed

73. Nor are clothes borrowed from you
May God lead your return to gain retribution

74. From those who diminished me and restore what was lost
With every dear one who offers what her people prized

75. She has a high office with her beauty and carpentry
When she comes to mind among the transmitters they imagine

76. Caskets of musk are what they carry
She nods with the gifts her attributes bring

77. As if her necklaces were docile birds gifted to you
She exudes a Persian grace native to her breed

78. Yet tenderness and coquetry for Arabs in her
When she visits bareheaded your supremacy is her crown

79. And rapt attention suits her beauty
She bears a mark of her beauty for the festival

80. Arabic taste is her ornament and rhyme
If my words fall short of reaching you

81. I have a purpose in sending them though few
