1. The slanderers spoke truly, your pledge is lost

4. Tears that dry my eyes each time
Pour down on you from eyelids that guard them

5. Does the beautiful one desire all I have gained?
With you lost, am I ever profitable?

6. I swear if youth and glory return
You have not known, to it there is no intercessor

7. A foe, yet you are love, though
You disobey in it if I obey enamored

8. Loyalty testifies that if I betrayed it
It could not unite me and your pact

9. The miserable habits of my days left
My blessings through one I love, and sorrows devastated

10. Your wounds have bled, O wounded by his time
Beneath burdens, though your gashes have no bandage

11. Considering yourself, how modest you are, revealing
No disgrace, your integrity no defender

12. My life was safe before I knew
Who hopes for safety, he is tempted

13. So now I deafen him with an arrow that
In his heart has nothing but death struggling

14. A crawling reptile, no pretender is he

None but you is sought, all else withholding

That which you are given, though your eyelid slumbers

19. How you have removed from the pen, made deadly
Its strokes against the armored, and battle days

20. A corpse with, in its mold, a living soul
Silent, yet in its lips fluid water

21. It flows the morning after the Nile, black as tar
As if for pitch, yellow bursts forth

22. A people ransom you whenever
Their means fail them and stratagems

23. They sold praise for wealth, and it suffices them
The loss of a deal from which the seller profited

24. Today is the feast of one whose royal ancestors
Were past, a streaming right, widely known

25. How much good fortune for the caliphate among us
Is withheld from it when the crescent rises in Ramadan

26. So dress him in the garb of the immortal after him
In glory when the ascending crescent has appeared

27. And listen, as the unique one strung verses and gently shook
Clouds, and the shining spear polished

28. The black nights kept me sleepless for them
Guarding the white hands, though they are trusts

29. When I saw fate narrow and its people
Turn from me, while in you I have ample retreat

30. I fortified my side with your name, seeking refuge
So let the two abandon what they would do
