1. The dwelling of wishes is spacious, and kinship is harmonious
O home, you have never betrayed kindness

2. And, my Lord, I became happy after adversity
As long as your meadows pleased me, the bloodshed continued

3. If the face of fate turns away from you, frowning
Yesterday it is smiling at you today

4. Or barrenness makes your protection disappear
Year after year, yet these are the sacred months

5. The abode of love you are, O abode of peace, when
Our loved ones within you are safe from harm

6. How many a rising moon in you, if it were not
A moon, its night would not disappear under the dawn that hides

7. The one leaning his stature, if his leanings were not
Astray in love, he would not be an idol

8. And wayfarers, when they walk without domes raised
Or tents pitched for them

9. Between me and them, when the distance comes between us
An arrow flies to the one following their tracks

10. The distance of the eye, however much it extends, so if it misses
Beyond the range of eyes, no flag is erected for it

11. The people of the Tigris are westerners. If they swore
The sun would not see their perjury for their sin

12. God has acceptable ones among them whose rule
Is silent yet speaks against silence

13. When she saw white hair she disliked
How can Zayd be disliked when his name is known?

14. She said, purifying it for me, as she dyes it
How venerable is old age but for it being decrepit

15. She extended to the king, guarding and supporting him
A hand that is kissed while holding on to the corner

16. A hand, in both my conditions, moves
With truth, either conferring bounty or vengeance

17. Tell the minister, for his awe has led
Many a difficult path that does not burst with gunpowder

18. You have brought me to it so I reach the ascent, for poetry has been ennobled
With you, and ambitions have lived in your presence

19. You have sown the selected manners, so they have flourished
As twitters for which domes and summits are built

20. After the excellence of a person was deficient
Among the people, who would seek excellence from them?

21. We blamed the world for their sin
While we know who the sinner is

22. And we complained of our time though no fault is his
While time has been wronged and accused

23. A person harvests, while his nights condemn him
And people are corrupted, while days are contended

24. And time is harsh to the mean when its children are mean to it
And gentle when they are gentle

25. Today is as yesterday, no difference between them
Our kings are our time, and the difference is among them

26. This water is that, and this sun is that, and qualities
And tastes have changed over time

27. That is not but because your denial has blown them away
From the spring of governance, so their disorderliness overwhelmed

28. And that the world's welfare and its ways
Are delicate, in their height you dazzled it, and they became blind

29. The people became your enemy, a people, and time a lad
While a back bent with old age and decrepitude stood up

30. For every time there is an allotted share of you it discerns
So providence is equalized among them

31. A day in which injustice died through your justice
A night in which darkness died under its light

32. Your generosity was not pleased that it watered
The visible world, until the dark became white

33. And a night of radiance though it is dark
With a night of solid ice though it blazes

34. The face of time sparked and inflamed through it
While its heart cooled from its beauty became stifled

35. It confused the year when you made it a sign in it
And by fire at night a sign is known

36. Reveal to me and teach me wisdom, compose
This position is beyond thoughts, dumbfounded

37. Does the sublime horizon turn you back
Or has the sky held fast to you, believing it inviolable?

38. Or have the stars fallen in yearning for you
Hoping for your gifts, gathered and separated?

39. Or are you Joseph promised, and the stars have bowed
To you, and all this is a dream?

40. And twinklers against the edge of darkness which
Have a limit by which Indian veils are twinkled

41. When standing in rows before the darkness they are fixed
To it while thoughts are defeated

42. Increasing in light when their visions are aroused
Briefly, either their wishes are fulfilled or hopes cut short

43. From every heartbeat of still bosoms
Laughing at night while eyelids are closed

44. So I do not know if fear has touched them
Until they cried, or hope so they smile

45. Slender waists, their slimness and pallor are
From health, while in others they are sickness

46. They stand on a single leg which has no foot
Complaining of passion in a tongue no mouth contains

47. Either a canal whose teeth have shed blood
Or a finger burning from an asp's bite

48. One with legs who does not walk on four
Until he is led, brought near as he crumples

49. Flimsy coverings whose clothes hold back
From us when brought close, not feeling their pain

50. A name of armor whose meaning is not
What armor does while coats of mail are pierced

51. If ignited it is a crown, if its back is bent
Its red earrings appear or its cheeks are embers

52. A pattern of bees the king has invalidated
You have spread in it the sons of Kisra, and they have not drawn

53. Blessings upon non-Arabs, specially endowed to them
While Arab and non-Arab vie for them

54. A people who see towns in fire, gaining pride
And a people who see fire as their God

55. Do not deny the frequency of their request. What they have proposed
And the panegyrists for they have spoken what they knew

56. Those who ignited tied up fire and those who lifted
The veil from seekers of favors flocked

57. The sky gives little while weeping
Stingily, while you give plenty, smiling

58. Your hearing is accustomed for praise to be sweet to it
As if each poem cleaved it is a melody

59. And sent the people in droves to you, a mouth
Each question's answer with him being “yes”

60. Not like the stranger, their hands and tongues
Have not ridden horses until after they became old

61. We used to be told of people who studied
Stories of generosity while being excessive, accused

62. And we thought the people exaggerated in their tales
And embellished with fanciful passions for them

63. So your generosity came with evidence of what
Transmitters transmitted and confirmation of what they claimed

64. They were generous, by God, if revived
Until they saw you, they would say this is generosity

65. You sealed them, and may God bless their best
In generosity, as my words are sealed in speech

66. I am presented while the world delays me
From this position. Who is the judge between us?

67. How many sisters have been proposed but not betrothed?
Make me their guardian, yet no voice was heard

68. And those connected, so connected, if they comprehended
My poetry bearing for them what they comprehended

69. I have become deprived of your bounties that they were allotted
While I was accustomed to be allotted if they were deprived

70. They have learned when you equated me with them
Whom you have graced and upon whom blessings are good

71. So listen and correct, for none is lost or wronged
While you are their dealer, the fates and the prices

72. I have not been saddened for property that is gone that
Another attained, but manners and repute have eluded me

73. And do not cease to deprive me for a time from
Your favours, though lapses of generosity are to be seized
