1. May Allah heal a soul that does not humiliate itself for what it desires,
And patience, when fate hears of it, it is amazed,

2. And a chest, when other spacious chests are constrained
By events that it faces with family and a welcome,

3. Far from notions that were lowly,
For if you are in acquiring virtues, you are drawn near,

4. Accustom yourself, my lively lad, to my morals, if you wish to be
My friend, either excusing me or blaming me.

5. Hate, if you are poor, and if you are
Rich, then be calm to the rich and ingratiate yourself.

6. If you do not find what they value, desiring
Half of it, then intimidate.

7. For unless you hope or fear them
And sit with the mediocre, you will be frustrated.

8. Wake, O my time! Perhaps I will come
To a plain I hope for due to my great difficulties.

9. Did your clothing yourself in chastity and
Taking the position of the hopeful deceive you?

10. If my stance became long, be sure
That it must have a shocking result.

11. And O wakeful one, seeking sustenance is a resort
I disdain my soul from it while it is generous with me.

12. Take the soul and desires from me, for they
Have made something other than them my mount.

13. Forbidden, even if you make lawful
For me, when the most wicked of people brings it.

14. Do you forbid me from avoiding the base?
Yes I am steadfast, so turn away from me or be angry.

15. Shall I meet the miser with praise
In which my witness and hidden self are two opponents?

16. And speak falsely about him in the words of a truthful one?
Many times when I am truthful I am called a liar.

17. I have been accustomed to praise the benefactor as a trait,
I say what is in him and blame the sinner.

18. I was not made happy by the truth that I am against the enemy,
Nor was it shameful that I am powerless against my father.

19. A needful soul, wisdom prepared its chest for it,
So I attained it, praised in the sequel.

20. I wanted it, with a troubled heart,
The intention of the son of Hujr before it, or Jundab.

21. By a complete night whose stars
I enumerated, going to their rising place in the east.

22. I have no company, and they have no gathering,
But in my heart is what is in them of kindling.

23. It sees the highland, but whenever the eye's assumption
Wants to deny it, it is proven false.

24. It sees it while unable to reach, hovering around it,
The eagle's eye, incapable and awe-struck.

25. I walked, so it led me, with a pure heart,
To mighty things I did not attain, and a tried body.

26. The will of fortune tired me out, and whoever has
A need with the sun, grows tired.

27. May the unique, All-Sufficient ransom me, his tongue is cowardly,
Brave in speech, though not aimed.

28. Miserly, if the sea were between his molars
And he parted it from its drops, it would not seep through.

29. He competes with him foolishly with an unkempt opinion,
He toils but does not excel, and a noble lineage.

30. And a pretender, one who boasts openly
When the youth claims lineage, he is told: “Be veiled!”

31. O rider, either you rode so do not alight
Comfortably, or you walked so mount.

32. Perhaps you will come to the path of generosity racing
Ahead with that crowd despite the jostling.

33. And say, O Abu Al-‘Abbas, rather O Abu Al-Wara’
For they are all, in what you possess, the sons of a father.

34. It is I whom a visit did not quench my longing
Rather, the distance increased my passion.

35. If you love something, either you see it
And wish to suffer, so visit then avoid.

36. I yearn when the delegates take leave,
Like a young man whose beloved passed by Rabarb.

37. By God, I did not avoid you this year willingly
Nor was traveling towards you my intention.

38. And my companion is no heart with confused assumption
Turning me in the two worlds to other than you.

39. When camels are excited by singing, I
Sing when traveling, and generosity excites me.

40. My soul is for you, that which her love is for
Even if she is angry in a necessary duty.

41. I avoided people for you in love, so be loyal to me
And stand by me to the usefulness of your hands’ friendship.

42. They gloated this year that you drew me away
And your path is justice and uprightness, and that is my path.

43. If they blame that I singled you out, excluding them
In praising you, then witness that I am not blaming.

44. If their hands’ evil corrupts for me and doubts,
Then plenty of good reward for you is pure.
