Repel it, so treat me kindly in its defense.

8. I implored you while fate held the nights,
When you gift it, it quickly recoils.

9. Can it be but the vizier between us, we said
To the Mizn's water, flow freely but a few steps.

10. I turned my soul from the people to him
As seclusion left its companionship.

11. I say to an ambition, if it were said
To reach the stars’ height, it would not accept its rising.

12. When harm troubles you, seek refuge
In Sabur's protection, find comfort in his land.

13. Trust, even if your need is precious
As when the lion extends his arm to it.

14. The stingy and cowardly among them ransom
A man whose generosity meets his valor.

15. I suspected him good, so it became truth
And how often do ambitions pause at its rising!

16. I visited so I stood before a generous one
Powers change in his noble presence.

17. Pure water I clarified and increased
Above passion, pure what I never plotted in deceit.

18. I say to those who ask of you while dejected
As if an ear wouldn't be pleased to hear it.

19. Before you is the kingdom of the Buyids, so ask
Through that kinship, who joined its gathering.

20. And one who, if enemies appeared as beasts
Would hunt them, so lions would stalk them.

21. And if they crowded through a narrow pass
His claws would gently rake their shoulders.

22. You were given justice of truth until
You could divide the world of shared pastures.

23. No king consults reason but
A man whose ink channel meets the pen's width.

24. Your brilliant sons but
Envoys of dawn who gained the headaches.

25. He is the house glory settled in
So it cast down and settled with its wares.

26. And of their virtues this day a feast
They sped to with their merit its devising.

27. And ennobled them through your merit a thousand years
So the nourishers secured its cessation.

28. Perhaps you see the state of a servant
With wisdom's eye, how you see his making.

29. Lend your hearing so I may complain
And I am wronged in my share's loss.

30. Poetry delays me with people
Who embarked its eulogies’ sails.

31. Poems, if only they preceded until
I dispatch them in travel’s merchandise.

32. I bought Joseph’s beauty while he approves
Of them, and I returned save for a measure.

33. And how often I sheathed it and drew another
I excelled with it yet skill did not avail.

34. I was cheated of writing and deprived of poetry
Is there a third craft for me?

35. I incline to dislike with people
As the pennant inclined with the wind.

36. I struggle only with livelihood
That comes without intercession.

37. If it is attained, then you are for it, otherwise
Upon me is only to strive.
