1. I experienced the phases of this life
That came upon me one after another

2. And I came to see its nature
Through trials that unveiled its secrets

3. So I no longer deny its inconstancy
Nor its fleeting passage

4. It matters not if it tightens the yoke on my shoulders
Or if it treats my soul gently

5. Its luxuries do not dazzle my eyes
However tempting and delightful they are

6. I forgive those who reproach me
For I must accept its excuses

7. Leave it be, and abstain from it
Fearing its traps, wary and cautious

8. And resign yourself, for you will not be safe
From its tyranny unless you shun it

9. Rove, O caravans of pilgrims
Secure one day, anxious the next

10. A free man cares not for oppression
As you traverse the wilderness daringly

11. The desert flourished as I sat
Hoping for wishes, though fickle they were

12. I wronged myself among its people
Though the soul wrongs only itself by choice

13. A subjugated homeland consoled me
That spews out its free men

14. And how many times did Babylon entrance me
Though it is by nature a sorceress

15. If you are truly part of me, O heart
Do not be fooled by its glitter

16. One who can endure separation is better off
Parting from one who knows not his worth

17. I do not gloat at the humiliation in your homes
While honor lies in freedom and home

18. God will avenge me against a brother
Who denies me fairness with injustice

19. He will forever protect my honor
And seek to discredit me

20. I pardon his assembly, though brimming
With rancor, as streams flow

21. And he will not see me forget our bond
If he declines or falls into poverty

22. I wish he would guard my place as he guarded
His gold from spending lavishly

23. Without the Ayyubids where would the oppressed
Have found helpers?

24. A people, when I cry for aid, I fear no arrow
Even if faced with swelling seas

25. I dwelled among them where no neighbor is wronged
Nor a neighbor's rights encroached

26. A home where the guest is not spurned
And the night never lacks those who commune

27. To the timid and the bold it gives lodging
Calming the rage of the hot-tempered

28. You see the brave at heart among them
Though lions curse the butcher

29. If people turn away or close their eyes to you
Deaf and blind to your calamity

30. You opened their blocked senses
To the realities of this age

31. They forgot the flame of Abu Talib
So God brought forth its light

32. And if its lofty horizon darkened
It rose with its moons

33. The full moon's brilliance paled
If his noble face lit its realm

34. Glory embraced him, and he cared not
For wealth, its lack or its plenty

35. Power sufficed him, when exerted
With power the despots quaked

36. Greet him, but beware his clarity, like water
And stir him, but beware his heat, like fire

37. If the shepherd rested secure in peace
Slumber did not cloud his eyes

38. His flock was not one to tempt
The wolf's claws in his absence

39. Or if they inclined to evil, a soul arose in him
That spurred him to good deeds

40. By his management, the two leaders were spared
The woes and dangers of affairs

41. And dyed deep with his counsel a banner
Whose lengths trailed mightily

42. Hands were freed of the past, so they returned
No longer knotting its complex ties

43. One who stands by God's command took charge
When I tended the faith's bleeding wound

44. Keener than your advice is a sword
White like the full moon, sharp and ready

45. Dissent was silenced in his realm
Though before it was loud and defiant

46. A ministry that secured his possessions
As it secured his secrets

47. So carry him to the height of hopes
As your dedication carried his preference

48. Make use of time, agile and lively
That you may do as you please, elusive and fleet

49. Success will not in future
Lift its veil or covers from you

50. May Nawruz visit you in a meadow
Among my praises, the finest guest

51. Whose poetry split eloquence babbling
As thoughts flowed unrestrained

52. She resides with you, roaming the land
With recognition, far and wide

53. She attained the conclusive word, so she rules
While people watch in awe

54. She drinks from the fountain of meanings, preferring none
To quench her thirst before her

55. Despite her passion for you all
She carries estrangement patiently

56. Forgotten, neglected, yet unforgetting
Mindful even when ignored

57. She longs for one who shuns her and makes excuses
For one who is neglectful and indifferent

58. Justice would satisfy her, if she were treated justly
Yet she seeks only wealth and riches

59. Your share of her is the cream of her necklace
When the praiser thins his poetry

60. And my truthfulness toward you I consider
Redemption for my lying about others
