1. Are those your tears or just a passing cloud
Or is it your melting soul that drips?

2. They called for departure though I persisted
Weeping had led me astray, I was tearful

3. They bid their farewells at Ramah
I told them that Ramah is the place of gathering

4. I sent my eyes to see if they would perceive
If anything besides lies would come from the informer

5. Mundhir rebuked me harshly when I was alone
You befriended and parted, oh Mundhir!

6. They told me to endure even for an hour
I told them my time is much shorter

7. But extend the eye of good advice, perhaps
You are foreseeing and looking out

8. Strangers accept falsehood while forsaking truth
No, by God! They are deaf, I was told

9. Then do not mention solace to my heart
Even if that is what is said

10. May God water what Muzaynah had honored
And what a bearer had extracted and pressed

11. The sky that hides what it holds wept
Over its land and trickled

12. Our playgrounds in Al-Hamya and Az-Zaman
Are a blind night whose youth is fleeting

13. The age of unemployment is like spring
Green pastures and white meadows

14. A wild doe, if she desires would visit
Without hesitation or caution

15. If today’s pleasure turns away from us
We place our trust in another that will unfold tomorrow

16. In the alive, each new crescent
With it the crescent in the sky is atoned

17. She humbles herself to passion though mighty
Is insulted though her supporters are present

18. Tongues lash at her while we
Boast of knowing her secret

19. As if this and that, if time
Was a cup that once steadied does not become bitter

20. It takes on the dye of its days
As the weaver has woven its hems

21. A day you recognize out of heedlessness
Another you avoid out of denial

22. It frowns and wears out suddenly
And the healing of its wound is difficult

23. The need of a longing soul is the messenger of hope
Leading unto it without dismissing

24. It becomes anguish without ending
While the door to fulfill it is unpassable

25. I restrained my tongue from complaining of it
Though my chest with it pants rapidly

26. Of a covenant I kept and the religion
Of truth that I maintained and did not abandon

27. I wanted the rest of it so I turned
To it though its side is twisting

28. I forgot my rights over it while heedless
Though reminding of his heedlessness

29. With truth you destroy me with aloofness
While the horizons of your honor through me flourish

30. You sip the sweetness of my injustice
While my injustice is bitterer than hell

31. I will turn away from you though mounted
There is solace in the land and rain pouring forth

32. Whispers that erode the blossom of humility
Aspiring, facilitating or hindering

33. And that among the honorable gentlemen
There is a purpose to which it is deterred

34. Above the lofty summits there are eyes
To which one rushes and from which one rejoices

35. In the atmosphere of haste, when darkened
And the stars of guidance disappear

36. Courtyards that restrain visitors
Who, when the barrier is lifted, exalt

37. Its shade in the afternoon returns to them
Fragrant when perfumed in the dawn

38. A watering place, duty of the south
Its plains and springs that flow

39. Compete with the night until you become
For it the first risers and the dawn

40. Drinking places of the pilgrim where
The heavier loads are laid down

41. So do not let a passing cloud deter you
From what you intended last eve

42. Neither true night nor misfortune will stop
Neither the lame nor the blind

43. Nor are you diverting to an incorrect path
Nor dividing the intention

44. By Abu Al-Qasim the generous
It grows and its branches blossom

45. A noble one who sees that with wealth
One is debased or with riches made poor

46. He disgraces life by loving demise
And his pride envelops him sufficiently

47. He gives like the Son of Jesus his son
While between their two seas is the endless sea

48. So this one is generous in his poverty
While that in his generosity thrives

49. In adversity, his heart is deaf
If a boulder drips it does not drip

50. A nose that rages within its nostrils
If its passage is blocked at its end

51. A soul that if life is between two
Elevations, gains one and wealth chooses the other

52. It went in the path of the most arduous and dear
Without being touched by the slightest of strokes

53. A day some of its hours
Are of blood, the garment of day by it red

54. Wading into it benefits him
Though his waistwrap by it shrinks

55. An alertness of one whose tracks
Behind him do not sleep nor retrogress

56. The clamor of stirring settled thickly
On the back of his fully armed steed

57. It broke free so its mouth foamed
As a pearl breaks free from its shell

58. Cutting a fickle thing by which one profits
And a plentiful grace by which one wins

59. If he says, “Tie the knots of the talisman upon you”
His expressions entrance and enchant

60. “Oh you who has left wine, do not go to it
For its nature intoxicates”

61. It shows you by its façade frivolity
That is bashful and heavily veiled

62. In its understanding for you there is
Deceit, and in its armor there is firmness

63. The glory of excellence has perfumed it
While the most perfumed and purest is from it and its people

64. Ancient kings of whom the new
Are known by the branches of their origin

65. They did not fail to adorn time with
A prince, minister or appointed judge

66. Implementing his rulings when the people are commanded
Without itself being commanded

67. They are to their clan like the sky
All under it seems insignificant

68. For them is the cup of drink in the evening
And the horses at dawn when excited

69. Among them are its racing steeds, purebreds
And the wineskin if the gambling excels

70. What was candid of its fame in gallantry
They feathered and they launched

71. They passed the heritage of glory and settled
The homes of loftiness, labor of those who lagged

72. They knew through their son one day when presiding
That their banners will spread

73. What God exclusively grants of inheritances
Is earned through the likes of their generosity

74. No protecting their proud integrity with humiliation
Nor straightening their curved integrity

75. One who claims the mark of nobility
While nobility by its form recoils

76. He wore in his claim the passion of others
Deluded while in vileness seeing clearly

77. He saw you perfect so thought perfection
For every lad who sought it could determine

78. He did not know that majesty is tiring
Nor that the love of loftiness impoverishes

79. The slumber of inadequacy took his eye
So he did not know the merit of the sleepless

80. To you is virtue, so listen, as speech
Is summarized then expands for it

81. It rages wildly and walks on embers
So it kindles or lights ablaze

82. Do not let the misleading of the heedless dissuade you
From what you have intended and made evident

83. Neither true nor false will avert it
Neither luck will divert it nor the blind

84. You are not diverting it to an incorrect path
That twists, nor to a divided intention
