1. Our companions left us at dawn while the caravan was being blamed

It's the same, while some of you stayed up and some fell asleep

3. You left us, among the complainers, and left behind
Hearts that refused to know patience without you

4. They veil their faces from the sun, while the sun is in them
And seek guidance from the stars, while the stars are from them

5. I ask Nu'man the wise about them
His knowledge is sufficient though he is a foreigner

6. And I dream with sympathy while separation is sorrowful
Through which the reckless passionate one appears

7. When it was time to bid farewell to what I was accustomed to
And nothing remained but a gaze to be treasured

8. I cried over the valley and forbid its water
How can the water be permitted when most of it is blood?

9. I turned my breath away from their perfumes
As if their riding camels were marked with musk

10. I would blame if betrayal was the cause of estrangement
And I sincerely confess that I am passionately in love

11. I wished for the passion of union and separation for two days
Through it today suffers whom yesterday delighted

12. And that kings in their high castles were honored
By their justice in judgment for their generosity

13. They distinguish their friends from their enemies
When they retaliate on the day of reward and favor

14. But they made an unjust path for other religions
A course they took through tyranny among the people

15. So the fresh water was only in the envious murky
And the bright fire only in the lovers' kindling

16. Oh rider between the mountains on his path
He seems to trot fast but he is actually slow

17. Delivering a message after greetings
Hopefully safe from its dangers coming to me

18. Your pride's embers have settled in Dhibyan
Where they belonged and their kingdom resided

19. Knocking on deaf ears that ignore the flirt
And listen to the caller of fidelity so they determine

20. Why was decency an inborn trait binding us?
While it secretly dwindled and we are so wronged

21. A branch among you with good roots flourished
But you hurried to estrange it while it branched out

22. You circulated news of it so it spread
But when it grew, you asked and held back

23. Do you have whisperers or is it betrayal
By a guard's hand - far from that - or mouth?

24. I rethink what sin cast me
To your displeasure as suspicions translate

25. Surely my account found no crime
Except that you bored, and boredom sins

26. Or that an envier's bitterness
Towards his share made my fortune from you pain him

27. You turned away when they gave me support after you
So he stuck while the brave turned resolute

28. In my virtues he envied me
As I stood where he is subdued

29. I am not one fooled by a trick
That later leads to regret

30. Our generosity made us your slaves
Serving a people we honor and respect

31. With what efforts can you subdue your enemy
When you are tempted and accept?

32. By what wisdom do you consider a slip
If your discipline appears prohibited?

33. And your tempter by me to cease your gifts
Seduced you to your glory, had you known

34. I protect you from a sinful punishment
That you remained excused, yet it defames you

35. If only when you found fault, you would reproach
And reform when you reward and thank

36. You omitted my name from the parchment of your gifts
What decreased of your money when you reduced?

37. It's not poverty when you forgot to give
Nor wealth if you found what you spent

38. The worth of money is not the worth of your revenge
How evil the kings' tyranny when you're angry

39. By Allah, He has no right in what you kept
Nor the Sublime while my right you wasted

40. I do not weigh with the scale of giving yet
It seems small to me while in life so great

41. No humiliation annoys me year after year
Due to your sympathy which cannot be foreign

42. I'd be satisfied with the way of many fathers
Humiliated a little with chastity complete

43. My claim is known to you when I state
My decency which you recognized

44. But affections for maidens I married
And I'm saddened to divorce them

45. A soul that spent its youth with you
Wished to remain and grow old and weak

46. It embarrasses me for people to spread that you
Folded what you announced of me

47. When worry imagined how you are
And how when my mention you forget

48. I vent anger and my heart is eloquent
With it though my tongue preserves and ties up

49. Within me remains water from remnants of your affection
Abundantly with it from my face you made flow

50. I clench my mouth silent upon it and between it
And pouring until when I speak

51. Why does the noble youth hoard money while able
To gain praise and he is dispraised?

52. I inspire my soul with your rebuke though it pains
And ingest what you liked though bitter

53. For the man's honor dies not while free
With a dinar or dirham to live and settle

54. My comforts which since lost I've known
To enrich while deprived I am destined

55. And the ideas conceived for them
As noble men while minds are sterile

56. When have I proposed with your favor, yet like my poetry
To your heights, am I a translator?

57. None but my praise spread upon you
Even if the Earth's fill is what you are praised with

58. It's equal if my intimacies don't delight before
And the poet not seen, is defeated

59. So why have two years of your estrangement been barren?
As if the years of estrangement progressing

60. Did I weigh heavily or was I slandered among you?
You heard other than what you have seen

61. Then don't thank the grace of reproach, for it
Is excess of chest pain and the illness concealed

62. What overflowed until its container narrowed?
A drop may fill a vessel so it brims

63. I endured two revolving years hoping
To be let down as wound piled on wound hurts

64. I testify if this year does not suffice me
Then there's neither withheld crops nor generous rain

65. If you wish to see how glory builds me
Then look how you are without me
