1. The gazelle asked, “What is this emaciation?
An ailment that appeared, or a mood that settled?

2. Where is that prominent, robust self,
With moist, smooth eyes, and supple thighs?”

3. “Have I waned after being so full,
Or did vigor pass through it and wither?

4. You and time did not deny what I knew.
A person's affliction is a day or a friend.”

5. “You have killed me, yet rise to ask people about me,
‘To whom does this slain one belong?’

6. Evil of beauty, and demon of youthfulness,
Many blood and minds have been shed.”

7. “Here I am, I fed passion with my flesh,
So my soul flows above my claws.

8. God's judgement on the guardian of my blood,
Though for my eyes and heart, I say nothing.”

9. “The slanderer slandered, and in his hopes,
Foolishly, I incline towards betrayal.”

10. “Do not blame me, say I am an ardent enemy,
Who melted away in anger, do not say I am feeble.”

11. “What bothered you about me, I have but
Harbored it in myself, is there an alternative for it?”

12. “For me there is a brother, unlike you,
Who yields sweetislink and changes it.”

13. “The state of two hearts when passion intensifies,
Is that of one heart with two paths.”

14. “Slumber left me, and sorrow for losing him
Assails me at night and lingers.”

15. “Maybe time will change him,
To a tint that fades, or a hue that transforms.”

16. “Good fortunes at their prime,
Are signs, while people and fate are fickle.”

17. “Quench my thirst or let me die thirsty,
Other than your drink which pleases the thirsty.”

18. “Ask the salty soil, show it the speck,
Where is that release, that smooth cascade?”

19. “It flew with love, like the Sufa bird flew,
And glory pardoned, as pigeons pardon.”

20. “I used to lament the lack of people, so who now
For my death, if only the few remained?”

21. “I see the betrayal of those who befriend me,
That my wavering friend is the best of friends.”

22. “If only the Lord who wrongs me,
Knew me as an equitable and fair judge.”

23. “I carry the load and exert my skin,
While my tongue is lenient and hand stingy.”

24. “It was said, be patient and wait for it to unveil,
The reluctant returns or the prolonged concludes.”

25. “I said I am not in despair, but a blemish,
Ugly is patience towards it, yet beautiful.”

26. “It frightened me that if I endured misery,
I’d say my life is but tranquil death.”

27. “O children of my days, I have with you
High ambitions, and many wants descend.”

28. “Lighten off my shoulders the burden of sublime,
What is between you is indeed heavy.”

29. “I was wronged of merit the day I sought it,
So relieve me, I am one who resigns.”

30. “Is there a permit at the door of fortunes,
Or a messenger to the confidant of fates?”

31. “So there appears from me and from it, an hour
An oppressor is heard, or a doubter speaks.”

32. “O family of Ayyub, you suffice me,
You are the need, and people the excess.”

33. “Console me with the continuity of your glory,
The sick seek only the innocent.”

34. “My family denied knowing me,
And kin shunned me, and tribe.”

35. “It threw me at the hands of injustice, onto
The back of a wilderness, with no guide.”

36. “With you is an intimate ally of mine,
And cheerful news that does not conceal, and acceptance.”

37. “And renewed covenants to be kept,
While people's covenants are fluid morals.”

38. “Whenever a foot slips in love,
A tied rope from it kindles.”

39. “By my father Talib, an outpour
Whose spring the water capped, so they said do not prolong.”

40. “Its Lord sustained it with generosity until
The flourishing of the caregiver and shady shelter rushed it.”

41. “A man, the entirety of a man, is tested
When time is harsh or affection derelict.”

42. “And the eye treasonously betrays its sister,
And opinion thins, and matters are grave.”

43. “From men who protected their honor,
Smooth with shame from it, and base.”

44. “They prevented it being disgraced with dew,
And if graves are built in it, it's a watering place and urine.”

45. “People were perplexed, and stars appeared
Deceptions of fate in them, and ignorance.”

46. “Every ancestor has what the noble
Repute of the prominent and house of pedigree arbitrated.”

47. “By you the restraints of dew were upheld,
And it, were it not for the soft slain breath.”

48. “And merit you harbored walked
Languidly in honor, and merit is guide.”

49. “So continue the glory that originated from you,
And to your havens it leads and ends.”

50. “And what you sired remains linked
To every bareness that has a long tale.”

51. “The winds fling over their heels
And lightening is repelled, and lightening is bride.”

52. “The earth is its cycle when it storms forth
With clouds of gratitude, flowing unconfined.”

53. “Whenever a shoulder from it grows sturdy,
A nobler, more sapient one succeeds.”

54. “So it is either fettered or freed,
To the hearing it brings joy, a tinkle and neigh.”

55. “And if it has no descendants,
It has mothers, excellent sires and steeds.”

56. “From the daughters of thought it is fed,
By sucklers, and nurtured by minds.”

57. “The horse-trainer swears it is esteemed,
So harnessed this way, even steeds wear out.”

58. “The Nairuz holds back from it a gift,
Unparalleled in the world's treasures.”
