1. We have resigned ourselves to watching dreams
If only a lute would be allowed to sleep

2. O debts that weigh heavy, I am a debtor to you
If only you'd let me pay off this passion

3. Why is it that none of you vilify the wanton
Except to blame or rebuke you

4. With unforgiving hearts and rough ways
And faces that know no mercy

5. I cannot bear to part from a meadow where
My soul found its illicit desires fulfilled

6. After it my fortune was to love a memory
Until I found fault in it

7. After it the branches did not stand erect before me
Nor the full moons shine perfect

8. O you who slay eyes, if the singing languished
Veiling them, your bones also languished

9. Blessed be Babylon for your memory's sake
And to live in Babylon if only it lasted

10. We brushed aside the road to Murakh
Spurning it for your absence and passion

11. And a spring whose carefree days we spent
As if God had not given it any sins

12. And when you say, recount a day gone by with me
I truly know not the days

13. Tell those who deemed all wealth misfortune
And generosity, demise

14. They supposed from their despair that they
Could not attain bliss and favour

15. It sufficed Abd al-Rahim that his sons
Clung to kinship in following him

16. They were truthful about him, so they walked straight
Praying after him, passing by

17. He surpassed them, and he was among them the son of Ali
And the Khouafis abound with great men

18. He prevailed in glory, then whatever ancestral glory
Crooked events straightened

19. The eye feeds on him what the soul drinks
United in loving him and coming together

20. A moon whose exalted sphere the sky
Adorned with stars of his kin of high rank

21. The youth does not count his brother
Until matured into a youth from a boy

22. O Abd al-Rahm, I have harvested for you
A cause that was blighted by any but you

23. Time sat with me in baseness, so you rose
Bearing adversities for me with nobility

24. Rouse me by describing you, I never supposed
I could move mountains crowded together

25. For congratulations there is a description particular to you
Though your fortunes encompass all

26. May God, O Abu al-Qasim, apportion for you
The good in multiples today

27. And show me in you that best
Of your vitality which has sensed the scent of musk

28. Excelling beyond your aspiration for glory
When a seeker falls short of his hopes

29. With trenchant blades in the enemies' throats
As people drive to the slaughter
