1. A day like the day of Ghazw
That I shall never forget were I to move on
١. أيوماً مثلَ يوم الجز
عِ تنساه وإن قَدُما
2. And pardon it though my steps once
Stumbled, being of those who give thanks for clemency
٢. وتكفُرُه وقِدْماً كن
ت ممّن يشكر الحُلُما
3. The haunts of youth and passion
And the abode of peace and inviolability
٣. ملاعبُ صبوةٍ وهَوىً
ودارُ سلامةٍ وحِمى
4. We gained from it the prey of the eye
While the huntress was prohibited
٤. رُزقنا منه صَيدَ العِي
نِ والقنّاصُ قد حُرِما
5. Does brought down, though not prohibited
Nor did we scruple to violate the sacred
٥. جآذر من ظباء الإن
س كنَّ دُمىً ولسنَ دمى
6. In them is the object of desire, blond
Whose cheeks bloom, though her complexion is sickly
٦. قنصناهنّ دون مِنىً
ولم نتحرَّج الحَرَما
7. You turn from the lightning flash
Smiling, though stricken with burning fever
٧. وفيهنَّ المنَى صفرا
ء يُفتَلُ كشحُها هَضَما
8. A seducer worshipping idols was smitten by it
His sight though he is misguided
٨. تريك بحسن صِبغتها
سلامةَ لونها سَقَما
9. She pelted me on the day of live coals
From the corner of her eye so she shot me
٩. تَلفَّتُ عن وميض البر
قِ عارضةً ومبتَسما
10. And her arrow had its way with my heart
Whether I protested or surrendered
١٠. أصابَ بها بصيرتَه
غويٌّ يعبدُ الصنما
11. I gained happiness through her though after
Bliss one is wretched who knew bliss
١١. رمتني يوم ذي الجمرا
ت عن طرف رنا فرمى
12. The pilgrimage cleansed me of rancor
Her hands spread forth but knew not
١٢. وكان لسهمها ما شا
ء من قلبي وما احتكما
13. We thanked her though her cure brought only sickness
The drawers of water take their ease at Zamzam
١٣. نعمتُ بها على إضم
ويشقَى بعدُ من نَعِما
14. Drinking its tepid water
From the water they draw which will
١٤. يدٌ للحج شَلَّ النف
رُ بسطتَها وما علِما
15. Bring health or cause throats to burst
None but the outcasts behind the barriers
١٥. شكرناها وإن بعث ال
شفاءُ بها لنا سَقَما
16. Drank it, and the tribe of Mudar
Allah watered the sands with what
١٦. سل الورَّاد يمتاحو
ن زمزمَ ماءَها الشبِما
17. The earth's stars poured down as rain
So wherever the blood of the slain flowed
١٧. من الماء الذي يرِدو
ن يشفِي أو يبلُّ ظَما
18. You turned tears into blood
In your eyes they are only tents
١٨. ولم يُرشَفْ لنازله
وراءَ المأزمين لمَى
19. Why should it trouble you to behold tents?
Oh Time, in that life which passed
١٩. سقى الله المحَّصبَ ما
سقتْ أرضا نجومُ سما
20. Will you never return, will you never revert?
I swore, though she was confined
٢٠. فحيث جرت دماءُ البُد
نِ قلَّبتَ الدموعَ دَما
21. Her nostrils plugged with cotton wadding
That I would redeem her with all my blood
٢١. بعينك هنّ خَيماتٌ
وما بك أن ترى الخِيما
22. Were she offered for sale however high the price
You see their fires in the distance
٢٢. فيا زمناً بذاك العي
ش مَرَّ أما تعودُ أما
23. Flames that blaze through the thickets
The others seemed like red camels
٢٣. حلفتُ بها محبَّسةً
تمجُّ أنوفُها الخُزُما
24. Bearing a litter, not warriors with lances
I came to feel affection in the family of
٢٤. بدائدَ أو تخال بها
على أَكم اللوى أَكَما
25. Abd al-Rahim though they were not kin
I feared for them but they
٢٥. ترى أُلهوبَها في السي
ر شبَّ على الغضا ضَرَما
26. Were the inviolable sanctuaries
They sheltered me and I nestled against them
٢٦. سواهمَ كنّ حمْراً قب
لَ تحمل ضمَّراً سُهُما
27. Dividing gifts as we picked at our sides
I bought them off against harm to my people
٢٧. لأضحت في بني عبد ال
رحيم مودتي رَحِما
28. Scrupulously weighing out the blood-price
So I was not cheated or made to pay
٢٨. صحبتُهُمُ على خوفٍ
فكانوا الأشهرَ الحُرُما
29. The wounds of the glancing arrows of regret
I parried the swords of their hands and the Age
٢٩. وناطوني بأنفسهم
فرحتُ بهنّ ملتحِما
30. Was smashed to pieces by them
I rose up by them in days
٣٠. وضمُّوني وكنت مدع
دع الجنباتِ مقتسما
31. Triumphant and taking vengeance
Kings who suppose sovereignty
٣١. شريتهُمُ بأهل الأر
ض مع تحقيقيَ القِيَما
32. To be destined and assigned to them
Content with the existence of their glory
٣٢. فلم أُغبن ولم أقرَعْ
بشوكة ناجِذي نَدَما
33. Not discontented with oblivion
As though were they brought low
٣٣. رجَمتُ بنصلِ أيديهم
صليدَ الدهر فانحطما
34. Their house would be destroyed piecemeal
It was they who established the Pilgrimage so praise
٣٤. وقمتُ بهم من الأيّا
م منتصراً ومنتقماً
35. Would not have come were it not for them
They gave generously so the rain cloud
٣٥. ملوكاً يحسبون الجو
دَ مقدوراً لهم حُتِما
36. Drew from their hands the gift of bounty
Thanks to them it completed virtues in a youth
٣٦. رضَوا بوجودِ مجدهِمُ
فلم يتسخَّطوا العَدَما
37. Who grew up and then reached puberty
They were matched in it and resembled
٣٧. كأنَّهمُ إذا افتقروا
أبرُّوا بيتَهم قَسَما
38. In purpose and were as one in determination
The perfection of the lance matched with
٣٨. هُمُ سنّوا الحجا فالطو
دُ لولاهم لما حَلُما
39. The lance-shaft joined together
And morning came to Abi Hasan
٣٩. وجادوا فاستمدّ الغي
ثُ من أيديهم الكرما
40. A path smoothed for their high endeavors
They are the emblems even if the fire brand in their midst
٤٠. رمتْ فوق السماء بهم
مساعٍ كلُّهن سما
41. Rose to power because of the banner
The seeing of the able fulfilled for them
٤١. فكانوا مُزنها شِيماً
وكانوا شُهبَها قِسَما
42. That which was ample and of great significance
It carried out in their path a mission
٤٢. بهم تمّ الكمالُ فتىً
وشبَّ وبعدُ ما احتلما
43. By which their religion was made secure
A youth the discrimination witnessed in
٤٣. تضاهَوْا فيه واشتبهوا
نُهىً وتماثلوا هِمما
44. His charm all that it knew
Reputation placed him ahead of
٤٤. تمامُ الرمح بالأنبو
ب والأنبوب منتظما
45. The elders though he was weaned only recently
He attained so was deposed
٤٥. وأصبحَ من أبي حَسَنٍ
طريقُ علائهم لُقَما
46. And overreached, so was unassuming
The judge of the clouds decreed against the clouds
٤٦. هم الأعلامُ لكن شب
بَ ناراً تشرُفُ العَلَما
47. When he ruled, with justice, not wrongly
He said to it in phrases of generosity
٤٧. وفَى عينُ الكفاةِ لهم
بما أغنَى وما عظُما
48. And the names between you
A resounding case of truth not yielding
٤٨. وقام بشرع سؤددهم
فأضحى دينُها قِيَما
49. To prejudice and not unfair
His opinion made smooth what ridges
٤٩. فتىً شهِدَ التفرّسُ في
نجابته بما علما
50. Of hill-slopes and rugged ground wrinkled
The beauties of custom whose charms
٥٠. وقدَّمه الوقارُ على ال
كهول وبعدُ ما فُطِما
51. Even the envious must acknowledge, though reluctantly
And flashes of lightning that gleam
٥١. أنال فكان مقموراً
وغار فكان محتشِما
52. Through the clouds to make the kindling catch fire
They shone like sparks and will go on
٥٢. قضى قاضي السحاب على ال
سحابِ له إذا حكما
53. Stirring until the live coals are filled
Should Time settle down with them
٥٣. فقال له معاني الجو
دِ والأسماءُ بينكما
54. And slacken after raging furiously
And his effort diminish a little
٥٤. قضيةُ صادع بالحق
ق ما حابَي وما ظَلما
55. Though he was resolute and determined
Tomorrow he will push his endeavor with them
٥٥. وذَّلل رأيُه ما أع
جز الرُّواضَ واللُّجُما
56. And broaden his step
And turn back regretting, rebuilding
٥٦. فما عنَّاه من أمر
رياضتُه وقد هرِما
57. Of the lofty places what had collapsed
A compact with me for the days regarding you
٥٧. محاسنُ عاد يعترف ال
حسودُ بها وإن رُغِما
58. I sealed it, firmly
And the promise of Fate to me is in
٥٨. وبارقة من الإقبا
ل تلفح عارضاً سِجما
59. Your ascent, seldom fraying
So let not one who reproaches though joined in fortune
٥٩. بدتْ شرراً وسوفَ تدب
بُ حتى تملأ الفَحَما
60. Make you despair of attaining happiness
Take the plunging of one who bounds upward
٦٠. وإن قعد الزمانُ بها
وفتَّر بعد ما احتَدما
61. After crouching, as the mantle of honor
Don again the raiment of the narcissus
٦١. وقصّر سعيُه شيئا
وكان مصمِّماً قُدُما
62. A garment reaching to the middle of the shin
Either the youth of Time or you find it
٦٢. سيبعِدُ خَطوَه فيها
غداً ويوسِّع القَدَما
63. Grown decrepit, its head shorn
Give thanks in full measure for one who apportions
٦٣. ويرجِعُ نادماً يبني
من العَلياء ما انهدما
64. To you the best of what he apportions
Visiting you from his lurking places
٦٤. ضمانٌ لي على الأيّا
م فيك عقَدتُه ذِمما
65. With what he hid and concealed
Calling voices that gather the expressions
٦٥. ووعدُ الدهر عندي في
علاكم قَلَّما انجذما
66. Scattered among the sages' sayings
To mention them works a magic
٦٦. فلا يُقنِطْك من وصل ال
سعادةِ عاتبٌ صَرَما
67. Though they are only words
They give mastery to poetry
٦٧. وخذ للعزّ أُهبةَ مَن
توثَّب بعد ما جَثما
68. Or else its masters will serve them
They come to you without neglecting you
٦٨. وُثوبَ الليثِ أخدرَ ثم
مَ هبَّ مفارقاً أَجَما
69. Whether accustomed or untried
That they watch over bonds from you
٦٩. وجدِّدْ لِبسة النيرو
ز ثوباً يَنصُفُ القَدَما
70. And what is inviolable
That the slanderer insinuating
٧٠. شبابَ الدهر أو تلقا
ه أُشمِطَ رأسُه هَرَما
71. His treachery against them is sinful
He intrigued and then tested you
٧١. ووفِّ الحمد كَيلة قا
سمٍ لك خيرَ ما قسَما
72. To transmit other than what he comprehended
But when he saw you as a tribe
٧٢. يزورك من مكامنه
بما أخفَى وما كتما
73. Impregnable to his casting of stones
No, by the father of al-‘Ulā, if what he alleged were true
٧٣. ندائدَ تَنظِم الأسما
عَ مما تنثُر الحِكما
74. He would not have blocked paths and precluded routes
٧٤. تكون بذكرها سِحْراً
وإن هي سُميِّت كَلِما
٧٥. تسودُ الشعرَ أو تُضحى
لها ساداتُه خَدَما
٧٦. تؤمُّك لا تغبُّك نا
ئياً أَلِفَتْك أو أَمَما
٧٧. لتعلم أنها ترعَى ال
أواصرَ منك والحُرُما
٧٨. وأنّ الخارصَ الواشِي
إليك بغدرها أَثِما
٧٩. تحرّش ثم جرَّبكم
لينقُلَ غيرَ ما فهِما
٨٠. فلمَّا أن رآكم طُل
عةً لِقِذافِه رَجَما
٨١. وَلا وَأبِي العُلَى إن كَا
ن ما سَدَّى كما زَعَما
