1. My friend, people are but drunkards
Turn it, and leave me tomorrow and the vine

11. We tore up the grapes for them in the wine presses
Until they clarified it over us as medicine

12. The unemployed roams with it on his wrists
The cup clothes him in bracelets from it

13. Pitying love from other than it
When I said how beautiful the full moon hid

14. By its kisses I have not separated
Did I spill it, the wine, or did it not turn?

15. Congratulations to the passionate, I took off
My patience for it and left dignity

16. And became a lad of the carousing of kings
At night, brother to the pleasures of initiation

17. My love, and the age, as long as it lasts, lasts
And my poetry, and the star, as long as it moves, moves

18. And the deserts from their homes I visited
And created from it a paradise to be visited

19. The storytellers glittered describing it
And Heaven was narrated about it and burned

20. Its archer straightened it out justly
So it etched and the eye considers it a neighbor

21. Tall, long, as our bravery necessitates
And short fortresses

22. And it split for its orchard from the land
When the vegetation in it emerged illuminated

23. And it scattered in the shade of its trees
Eyes of harm, a neck, and took cover

24. Shedding leaves from it with a loincloth
When the wind stirs on its branch, it cannot withstand

25. I came upon a slender one with a spear
And avoided the big ones from the small

26. And an outspread one who covered herself
So she sewed a shirt and wound a headscarf

27. And was chaste, protecting only her leg
And did not allow it except out of necessity

28. She tucks up her robes from it
For it is accustomed to plunging into the unknown

29. So it nearly hid it stingily from it
And of her beauty, that it cannot be hidden

30. She makes me doubt, compliant to the wind
Following it right or left

31. Do I approach to offer it protection
Against the like of it or refuse the buttons

32. And it dawns upon you, daughters of the abandoned camp
When the fronds put forth their fruits

33. Braids of twisted thread that adorn them
And they refuse to do anything but flourish

34. We brought it water from a towering
We returned, measuring ascent and descent

35. And it did not flow until we freed the streams
And did not refuse until we made the tender sing

36. When it climbs high
Clinging by nature, seeking to flee

37. So it bubbles foam when the girls
Speak to it of their news, brewing, excited

38. When they are generous with its dew, its generosity overflows
And if they neglect it, it turns away

39. They desire its entrusted water until they strive
To fulfill it the borrowed water

40. It relaxes with them in their midst
As the greatest caring for young daughters

41. They come out appearing to onlookers
Monasteries around it or minarets

42. If it aims at a spear, straightens a reed
They deflect flying arrows towards it

43. Containing them, the miracle of the two signs
Freely giving life and extending the seas

44. So from between wrinkled, beaten
On a hill it carried deceived

45. Its channels turned above it
From the water, generous, manly, carpenter

46. Whenever it is turned once
To impress, it flows and turns round and round

47. It has a sign that was not before it
But we overpowered it

48. You see its shadow solid, fluid
And bearing two opposites, water and fire

49. And like a bride, a bride who continuously
Holds out her hands over her shoulders, scattering

50. If they face it, it refuses chastely
With its chair to bear being settled

51. We sought a match for it from its people
But it refused, for other than a match is shameful

52. So we returned, courting it with platters
So it accepts chastely and preferring to conceal

53. And like the gazelle wronged in the name of beauty
So it is obstinate and disdains forgiving

54. And its mouth foams drool when
It separates from its lips, discharged

55. It walks slowly when the camels’ humps thirst
Intensely for water and heat

56. And were it not for the one who created the duck
Praise would have succumbed in it and diminished

57. But it is a guard against blame
I was its neighbor so it was unneighborly

58. I sang to it but did not succeed with my rise
And the expanse of my errors escaped from it fleeing

59. It shot me with an arrow belonging to it
Circling with the God-fearing however it turns

60. When it surpassed it to the hunt
It inflicted wounds confusing the trackers

61. So it tore my cloak and my breastplate came to you
Seeking vengeance from you

62. My slain are with you so do not let
The blood of my clothes overcome you, Compeller

63. And a house, when fate gathers winter
Takes refuge in it, so it gives sanctuary
