1. If the meadows of al-Hima and its plains are lost to her,
The Babylonian breeze and its fragrance suffice her.

2. How much love for a valley to life is barren,
Yet another pasture, fertile, is hated by her.

3. No side inhabited except exceeds what her soul desires -
Not its greenery or grass but the love inside her.

4. Let her enjoy life following her heart's desire,
The most flavorful to her is what tastes sweet to her.

5. Though lofty in her tribe, the young camel at Burdah
Is humbler than an unknown stranger's dromedary.

6. It worries her to be prey, if the herd from grazing is barred
When the herder folds his cloak, time for all to depart.

7. If alive, though crazed in al-Hima, should he find
A cure from love potions, healing and tending to her.

8. Each crescent moon whose arc are veils
Brings joy to stars rising as it is setting for her.

9. Spears of Banu 'Amir stand in his way
So his hopes are cut off, his wishes bleak to her.

10. He who sought union is wearied, the friend's arrow
Whose niche is next to his loved one, a guard onto her.

11. His arrow reaches all he aims yet hands around deflect it
He blames the desert that when beloveds left, so did its rain.

12. No use in his frequent blaming if few listen and take heed
Except my heart which shares love - that's his gain.

13. People are either my heart's twin or a friend to my lover -
The rest, I care not if they blame and complain!

14. I will tend what is between me and the varied world
I sipped its pure drink though it bitterened and stained.

15. Take me without betrayal, though faithfulness
Scarred my skin with wounds in long suffering pains.

16. That's the nature of earth - my constitution
Is not based on it - no water made it sprout rains.

17. I was created to defend a friend and be a shield
Repelling from him what injuries and stains.

18. My stillness is like the open horizon, its stillness,
My blowing like its blowing, gusts and winds.

19. I pardon slips, interpreting well,
Though frequent his sins and mistakes he offends.

20. Seeing his cheerful face suffices me
Without inspecting what's behind it, veiled and contained.

21. He who pries into news of dear ones to test them
Will never be free from what causes suspicion and blame.

22. Leave me with only time as my adversary
Its woes and calamities suffice as trials to test me.

23. It fooled me with steps, paths turned difficult,
The lion once docile, now violent and vicious in aim.

24. I greet and welcome the betrayer's hands
Though not out of friendliness, greeting or care.

25. Were it not for men, balm for injuries,
My blood their claws did tear and rip.

26. May the hands of Bani 'Abd al-Rahim quench me
And water the lives of all creation, being its rains.

27. No gushing torrent with blustering threat
Is more delicious than their valley, pouring its drainage.

28. They are the death of hardships, though time complains
In the face of injustice, frowning with furrow and strain.

29. If one were isolated for his excellence, it would shame
His tribes and people spread over plains.

30. Kings whose family glories the days carry
With deeds around the necks of stars they contain.

31. A child nurtured in their care grew into a king
This life grayed though from him it gains.

32. Theirs is his constricted crown in his kingdom’s days
Theirs is his sword and staff with which he reigns.

33. If a father passes, inheritance remains intact
The son succeeds him, in his place and domain.

34. Their dead live through them unlike all others
When the rider dismounts, unsaddled, the horse that he reins.

35. Whenever the leader speaks of them, youths and elders alike
Flock like ants when their hill is disturbed, now mundane.

36. He is the shining moon amid their powerful glory
When the glory of some is the paleness of youth it contains.

37. Goodness spreads his name when it travels far and wide
His character and deeds giving light, not restrained.

38. A youth completed, perfection attained,
A fresh branch not yet bent, its fruit unripened and plain.

39. He undertook leadership's burdens willingly
His determination firm, not weakening or waning.

40. Strange that the soils of travel are harsh
When the path itself is worn down, its help diminished and lamed!

41. Many raced who did not tie their feet
Nor prepared their camels for miles long and strained.

42. Some were born in their midst, his father and mother too -
Man bears no greater relation than son he sustained.

43. The day opponents exchange blows and battle calls
And the day adversaries argue with voices proclaimed.

44. None gather where their hearts are not present
None meet unless their hearts are contained.

45. Abu Hasan! Shame those who find fault
For jealous foes, the ember's heat and flame!

46. One faultfinding out of spite and hatred
While agreeing friends smooth it out and explain.

47. How can fault reach the edges of glorious ones
When the era's nobility have only defects and blame!

48. When asked who can surpass him, I said
Only if above him can be found his like and same.

49. Generous is he who keeps dividing his wealth
Only taking the portion that comes to him ascertained

Loving money's abundance only to dispense it

51. Earning wealth itself corrupts, makes bitter and stained.
You lengthened my hand, attaining what I sought

52. So the farthest drew near, once remote and constrained.
You spared me needing every pasture sought

53. And every rough terrain whose valleys had no rain.
When livelihood was slow in coming into my hand

54. You poured from Your palm sweet water, dissolving its hardness and pain.
None stumble unless Your party let them stray

55. None sin unless by Your gift they're left uncontained.
When terrors shake my herd, You roar

56. Fear melts away, cries can't restrain.
They now love me though I never asked

57. They seek my praise though I don't entertain.
No full moon giving me light ever sets on Your blessings

58. Nor guiding stars whose rising I gained.
Your ways never change in loyalty

59. Glory sees no defect in its ways to constrain.
Straying thoughts still flock to You

60. The rigid wilderness bows before their determined aim.
Wrapped in praising You, destination and journey

61. Like the night's darkness, ceaseless and sustained.
Smooth yet firm discourse, with wondrous depth

62. Widely distributed though strange and unexplained.
Grace flows melodiously, hearts enraptured by its rhyme

63. Seductive, capturing the soul, joy attained.

64. With it I adorn festivities, overflowing
Robing what was bare, covering its nakedness and stain.

65. From your assembly come bliss and abundant fortune
The ripest fruit and freshest rain.

66. Horizons have not seen, nor has the wind blown in all time
A reverent lover whose feet tread the dust of this plane,

67. Honor never changing, bliss never setting
Pastures never glimpsed at dusk or dawn's sweet refrain.

68. Thoughts flock to You nonstop
The harsh wilderness gentle, pliant in Your hand's reign.
