1. Truly, O Abu Nasr, your promises are hoped for,
Or are you deceiving me without possibility?

2. You set for my need a short period,
Upon you the heavens elongated my neck.

3. The time of the named month has been prolonged,
Until I thought the year was the state.

4. I hung the west, observing it with an eye,
That sees a star and thinks it the crescent.

5. If she stayed up at night, Jumada cried for me,
And if she slept, she saw Rajab as an illusion.

6. I drank patience, collecting it while waiting
For a day to follow the pure success.

7. I stood by you, protected in my assumption,
If an avaricious one drew near saying come!

8. The hand of denial melts away from it
And contentment lifts it so it cannot be attained.

9. And I offered you the cheapest of sales, a heart
In which and by its fineness is made valuable.

10. My love saw you as a peer so it cherished,
Though it was defiant, exhausting elephants.

11. So, not an elegant glance renewing
Which I cannot endure to carry.

12. And shortcoming which affection views as forbidden
If pride beholds it as permitted.

13. It negated the morals of that righteousness from me
And changed the water of that humanity to bitter.

14. It was uncertain when my soul turned away in it
Did it turn away or was it preoccupied?

15. And how often it recoiled to rebel against you until
I chastised it from loyalty to it.

16. And I said to it, “I feel the excess of my love
For it so visit its side gently.”

17. I make you wait that I say come close but when
I lower myself to it with my need it lengthens.

18. I swore, my sight and heart in accord,
A passion for that which is opposed or allied.

19. I meet a friend so I see, in my assumption,
Through my trials from him the refined.

20. So I tell him but do not please him with words
That I may please him with deeds.

21. I love a person if dry hands
Do not pour him drink niggardly but pour freely.

22. And if he is stingy to give a request
With the embers of his fire, even the kindlers were too narrow.

23. And I dislike all who make excuses for disregard
To shortcoming - he attained but did not attain.

24. When his clouds rise with a promise
His despair blows a north wind.

25. I seek refuge for you, most glorious, from faces
That display cunning above hearts that rise high.

26. Tongues that greet falsely as if in agreement -
Eyes that plot pretending conciliation.

27. Your brother is none but one you place
Your matters with so he carries their weight.

28. The sword has no meaning but cutting
Even if it shines, adorned and polished.

29. When you find good fortune in a momentous affair
Your absence profits then with good timing.

30. So a friend was none but one who condoled
When you built wealth, he stretched his palm.
