1. He watered her abode with his tears and greeted it,
A sad lover who turns the soil of the house into streams.

2. And a dangling fragrance wafted over it,
Of vegetation pleasing its barrenness and its watering places.

3. It kept erasing the scars of its desolation
With the first signs of its dawn and its evenings.

4. Until the eyes see beauty it loves,
And the watering places with a bulging belly quenching their thirst.

5. It was nothing but a night breeze
Fulfilling its youth, whatever its finely chiselled idols say.

6. I love the arid wastelands of the enemy tribe,
And I adore the soil of the land that I had never adored before.

7. And I pretend to agree on something dubious,
So it may grant me status and glory.

8. And how can I join ties with Umm Malik’s tribe,
When between our lands lie Syria and its mountain passes?

9. My heart sees it with the eye of yearning from afar,
Envying, but who can make my eyes behold it?

10. By Allah, how pure and how muddy was my love for her!
And how far and near fate made her from me!

11. When my eyes felt lonesome, I comforted myself by seeing
The likes that made me yearn for her and her semblances.

12. So I embrace the straight, sturdy branch in place of her wrists,
And I kiss the rim of the cup, imagining it her mouth.

13. And on a sandy hill, a doe appeared before me one day,
Shy, having lost her fawn in the lowland.

14. Fear of separation shakes the pearl that is her heart,
Increasing the beauty of her eyelids and her glance.

15. So I never doubted, O mother of Malik,
The truth of the simile that you are her!

16. For even if you are not her cheeks and forehead,
You are the best, or you are her eyes!

17. His delusions in loving a strange abode
Whose greedy aspirations are hard to deter.

18. Leave him be - it is Najd’s matter,
For if Najd were destroyed, it would not surpass it!

19. You barred me from seeing her with my eyes,
But can you stop my heart from longing for her?

20. On a night at Athl, he shortened its duration,
Strolling its specter with sighs in remembrance of it and oh!

21. It strode to me facing dangers
On the path of passion – may Allah not facilitate its way!

22. The darkness almost led it astray,
If not for the twinkling of its bracelets guiding it.

23. Cry out - do you see that deserting the loyal
Is the nature of the ignoble in passion? I will not forget it!

24. Save me from its evil or lessen its harm,
Perhaps you will find one like it and avoid it.

25. If you do not preserve for the unpreserving,
And do not abide by any covenant in you to abide by it,

26. Then live alone or be as stones among people!
For loyalty is a word whose meaning has died.

27. Yes, among the clan of Abdulrahman and their house
Are the origins of glory preserved and its remnants.

28. And with them is the ancient covenant to their neighbor,
If the foremost mountains claim it, and its farthest.

29. They are kings who built its goodness at the peak of honor,
With dust, and made its heights into heaven and elevated them.

30. They have a green palm grove, watered at its roots
By the flowing dew, and its branches are fragrant.

31. It implored Allah for wishes in its fruits,
To bear them, and rose up to Him, so He granted them.

32. Every weaned child grew in reason,
Saying “Yes” in the cradle when he first babbled.

33. Brave when the decrees flow in his veins,
Submissive when fate pulls the ordeals and straightens them.

34. The brother of valor until piety protects you from him,
So you meet him bending to the ways of God-consciousness.

35. And with the chief of the faith among them is a witness,
That the breasts of generosity release it and split them open.

36. He pursued in the empty borderlands and reformed them,
And exposed himself in the darkest of tribulations and made them clear.

37. They are the pure essence while you are an orphan girl
Among necklaces - nothing adorned necklaces like it.

38. Were it not for your brother or your brother between them,
As he is the highest of fingers and their midst.

39. You would have owned perfection, capable and empowered,
And not been destitute despite the excess of your beauty.

40. You were endowed with a soul whose forbearance precedes its might,
And whose authority is an advisor over it in God-consciousness.

41. When angry passion turns its nature away,
The generous folk reward it and make it equal.

42. As if her reproacher had eased her for glory,
And her impoverisher in obeying generosity had enriched her.

43. So if the frowning critic denied himself,
He would see from her manners and traits.

44. And the dead among the lowliest, over their faces,
Are the appearances of a speaking unseen within them.

45. You threatened them with punishment as if
You had sent their souls news of their death.

46. Whoever among them wanted elevation from you
Arrogantly but could not achieve it so he hated you.

47. Does the eye have any foothold on the orb of the sun?
The one who stared at it tired his eyes until they weakened.

48. Abu Hassan, loyalty is a trade,
When its Master, gratitude, takes care of it, it grows.

49. And however you have fulfilled the dues of generosity,
It is to the free speaker you give them, so fulfill them!

50. You have favored and given loyalty its due,
So honor with a generous palm its affection from your gifts.

51. There is no good in the pitcher except what love drew from it,
And no hand is generous except what virtues poured into it.

52. You have answered though my poetry called you from lips
Parched, collapsing at the feet of one walking its sands.

53. You were a helper whose victory was not lacking
When it cried for help in the battle, you swiftly aided it.

54. So however long this tongue is eloquent,
And speech is available to it, you hear it - clear or faint.

55. Subtleties to the ears yet heavy
Upon the heart of whoever bears enmity and hates you.

56. In your purposes it provokes the drawing out of its arrows,
And in your honors it distances the night of its path.

57. Intimate to the ears until it is as if
It is a pendant that the ear wishes to adorn itself with.

58. When it defends a honor, surrounded by protection,
Or when it frowns at a face, provoking the anger of a king.

59. Yours is to pardon hands that transgressed
And arrogance that flows freely in generosity.

60. Do not let a noble plant you have planted thirst,
For roots are not uprooted except by lack of watering.

61. Prepare it, prepare it - all glory indeed
Belongs to a Lord once He extends His hand and folds it.

62. Clouds were coming from your hands nurturing me,
And those clouds have now leaned their watering unto it.

63. Do not deprive hopes with you of their share,
Nor manners with you of their subtle traits.

64. The delegation of happiness greeted you at Nayrouz,
Its early morning proceeding to you and its evening.

65. And the days continued to rule their matter
And command them as You will and forbid them.

66. And by the eye of God, during every misfortune,
My soul was wary over you and apprehensive of them.

67. So whenever I entrusted my soul to a need,
And feared its loss, I placed it in God’s protection.
