1. With every mother who sacrifices herself although she gave birth
To a beautiful, pure-blooded daughter endowed with glory

2. She descends from the best lineage of Adnan with eminent nobility
None in this world can match her stature

3. Yet, alas, of what use is sacrificing when
Claws of tribulation cling fast to you

4. O most generous of pure mothers, indeed
You have left in my heart distress that only fire can relieve

5. Between us is the breadth of two horizons, yet
Your shrine is near, though you did not reside here

6. Your tomb is watered, and for watering it
A perpetually flowing spring suffices

7. When the echo of her weeping sounded above it
From amidst the delicate plants, flowers laughed

8. Tell the south wind, when it comes greeting
Accompanied by evenings and dawns

9. Bend toward the Mosque of the Feet, and depend
On the direction of the north, and let not wandering distract you

10. Lower the high saddlebag, and do not stop
Until flags and stones meet you

11. On the right side of the well-known mosque—the one
With two columns—is recognition and denial

12. Bypass the porticoes, but wherever lights
And illuminations shine from the dome

13. And fragrance overflows as musk perfume overflowed
Among throngs of merchants and perfumers

14. There the curtains were lowered from the pillars—
The vicissitudes of time wore them threadbare

15. And there is a door leading to Paradise, a shortcut
By which is the path—so excellent is the door and the house

16. O Lord, be as I think You are to me and to her
So does the Most Forgiving, Vast in Generosity, act

17. I used to think they were residing with me
I did not think they were visitors

18. No hope after her will ever delude me
Far from it! All hope misleads

19. If only someone had told me while the house was full
That the loved ones were, after loss, but traces

20. O dwelling that some of its inhabitants spent the night in it
Then, before morning, it was said they departed

21. I spent happy moments with them, and they were
Phases that for you remain, phase after phase

22. All in life are parted from their loved ones
But it is only hastening and respite

23. Our journey on steeds is toward a time
When our lives and worldly arts are but travels

24. No man benefits except by what he puts forth
No coins remain thereafter, nor dwellings

25. Patience, for the slain of time have no retaliation
And for the venom of death there is no antidote

26. O Time, the greatest thing that saddened me
Was misfortune for which no vengeance was attained

27. If you were, O Time, one who meets in battle
Or one who repays like for like

28. I would rouse against you an army that stirs up pools
But you are a coward in the narrowest sense

29. While we roamed around her, it was as though
She was both to our right and left

30. The youth faces his afflictions though coerced
As if he had chosen to submit

31. How many steps in the course of life
Were cut short though they were our lifespans

32. Man is admonished and exhorted by man
If only regret and warning were of benefit
