1. My eyes have no excuse not to overflow and pour out,
Tears are stored for this day, sought out,

2. And if you want a witness of my youth,
Tears are the most just witness that does not lie.

3. No water arose in the eye before its sorrows,
Except the fire of the heart blazed up flaming.

4. No welcome to the vast wilderness that brought
News by which the vastest plains are straitened.

5. Sorrow overcame patience in it after
Patience with sorrow was not to be overcome.

6. So the dripping cloud rained on the tender green growth
Giving drink at Egypt wherein the dripping cloud rains.

7. The rain of the land when it is clear in its plants,
Calls to life the places it makes verdant.

8. Calm in spirit, pleasing to meet,
Is implanted as beloved in hearts.

9. O gap the times have gapped which cannot
Be blocked up, though the breach mends not.

10. Great was my calamity, so the able failed
To describe its intensity, and the eloquent fell short.

11. I yearn for you, but my yearning is not stilled,
Dead as you are, yet sorrow tortures.

12. It left hearts suspended in grief
Forever that hearts are tossed about.

13. We bent over you praising, yet it made us weep,
While the singer laments you.

14. And if I blame the nights after you,
Sorrow says, 'Do not blame them.'

15. We never saw before you the sun's orb set
A bier, or set among the graves.

16. You rose under the earth inclining to sorrow
Whom hope of you inclines.

17. The sweet earth conveys to you its scent
To whom praise conveyed its sweet scent.

18. I never thought, before you were buried in the earth,
That noble deeds in dust are hidden.

19. Life after you is not life, but he
Who lives after you lives tortured.

20. If you are gone, yet you left behind sadness
That does not pass, and heat that does not depart.

21. You have wearied, after you, all who tread
The gravel, no, you have wearied the weary.

22. Who shall the glories climb or decline?
Who shall good deeds acquire or gain?

23. Who shall solve the difficult matters?
Who be angry for the threatened frontiers?

24. Who be guardian of widows and orphans
Sufficing them when no friend nor father avails?

25. Who drive back forays and calamities
When an army is routed or a company scattered?

26. God has prayed upon you in His heavenly kingdom
And the righteous, and some you deserve.

27. Farewell, O Saladin, what dawn broke or
Lightning flashed or star appeared.

28. Your purpose remains unswerving, it declines not,
And your mighty valour remains, it passes not away.

29. The beauty of your patience in misfortunes rides high,
And your noble return to disasters holds firm.

30. Far from your dignity to be carried off by sorrow
Or shaken by the most rugged enterprise.

31. What gathering has there not been dispersed?
What separation not attacked?

32. How much has befallen of misfortune, while you stood firm,
And conditions changed but your heart changed not.

33. And if transgression missed you but hit us,
It was the same: peace to mankind and steadfastness.
