The cooing of doves in the branches,

ما صادحات الحمام في القضب

1. The cooing of doves in the branches,
Nor the bubbling up of wine in cups,

١. مَا صَادِحَاتُ الحَمَامِ في القُضُبِ
وَلاَ ارْتِفَاعٌ المُدَامِ بِالْحَبَبِ

2. Mean aught unless when attained
Propriety obliges the guise of play.

٢. إِلاَّ لِمَعْنىً إذَا ظَفَرْتَ بِهِ
أَلْزَمَكَ الحَدُّ صَوْرَةَ اللَّعِبِ

3. Because of this beauty which conveys
A people from sobriety's grasp to rapture's expanse,

٣. مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَا فِي الجَمَالِ مَا نَقَلَتْ
قَوْماً عَنِ الْقَبْضِ بَسْطَةُ الطَّرَبِ

4. They who have looked on sheer beauty without
Any restrictive jealousy or veils,

٤. قَدْ شَاهَدُوا مُطلَقَ الجَمَالِ بِلاَ
رَقِيبِ غَيْرِيَّةٍ وَلاَ حُجُبِ

5. Are enamored of slender waists
With their flexings, and half-smiling lips,

٥. فَأَوْلَعُوا بِالقُدُودِ مَايِسَةً
أَعْطَافُهَا وَالمَبَاسِمِ الشُّنُبِ

6. And are infatuated with eyes, if they glance
Shooting strongly arrows of eyelids.

٦. وَافْتَتَنُوا بِالعُيونِ إنْ رَمَقتْ
تَرْمِي قَسّيّاً بِأَسْهِمِ الهُدُبِ

7. And they have surrendered in passion, subduing them,
Willingly to the rule of unmarried beauties.

٧. وَأَسْلَمُوا فِي الهَوىَ أَزِّمَّتَهُمْ
طَوْعاً لِحُكْمِ الكَواعِبِ العُزُبِ

8. In the secrets of their own passions
Is nothing dubious or corrupt.

٨. مَا فِي خَبَايَا غَرَامِ أَنْفُسِهِمْ
شَائَبِةً مِنْ شَوَائِبَ الرِّيَبِ

9. Their eyes were created for beauty
And purified by flowing tears.

٩. قَدْ خُلِقَتْ للجَمَالِ أَعْيُنُهُمْ
وطُهِّرَتْ بِالمَدَامِعَ السُّرُبِ

10. They have perceived no rank that restricts them,
While together they are the cream of ranks.

١٠. ما لاَحَظُوا رُتْبَةً تُقَيِّدُهُمْ
وَهُمْ جَمِيعاً عُمَارَةُ الرُّتَبِ

11. Turn thou about their taverns, haply a spark
From one of their cups without flame,

١١. فَطُفْ بِحَانَا تِهِمْ عَسَى قَبَسٌ
مِنْ بَعْضِ كَاسَاتِهِمْ بِلا لَهَبِ

12. May divert thy cares in the turning,
Or thou mayest in the folk attain accepted kinship.

١٢. تَصْرِفُ مِنْ صَرْفِهَا هُمُومَكَ أَوْ
تُصْبحُ فِي القَوْمِ مُلْحَقَ النَّسَبِ

13. And be thou their parasite in proper wise,
For I see no intercessor save propriety.

١٣. وَكُنْ طُفَيْلَتَهُمْ عَلى أَدَبٍ
فَمَا أَرَى شَافِعاً سِوىَ الأَدَبِ

14. And if thou drawest near to their pavilions,
Bow to the glory of beauty and approach.

١٤. وَإِنْ تَدَانَيْتَ مِنْ سُرَادِقِهِمْ
فَاسْجُدْ لِعزِّ الجَمَالِ وَاقْتَرِبِ

15. And abstain thy tenderness in their presence
From thee, for he who is absent from them is not absent.

١٥. وَغِبْ حَنَانَيْكَ فِي حُضَورِهِمُ
عَنْكَ فَمنْ غَابَ عَنْهُ لَمْ يَغِبِ
