1. My beauty, do not blame a love-sick youth,
For your charm, to the wise, is obvious as the sun.
١. أَمَالِكَ رقِّي لاَ تَلُمْ عَاشِقاً صَبَا
فَحُسْنُكَ لِلأَلْبَابِ يَا مُنْيَتِي سَبَا
2. And if my sin is my fervent love and obedience to you,
Then longing for you will intercede for me when I die a sinner.
٢. وَإِنْ يَكُ ذَنْبِي فَرْطَ عِشْقِي فَطَاعَتِي
هَوَاكَ شَفِيعٌ لِي إِذَا مِتُّ مُذْنِبا
3. And suppose that beauty were hidden from me,
Did not a wafting breeze spread the scent of cypress?
٣. وَهَبْ أَنَّ ذاكَ الحُسْنَ عَنِّي مُحَجَّبٌ
أَلَيْسَ بَرَيَّاهُ سَرَتْ نَسْمَةُ الصِّبَا
4. I would sacrifice my beloved, made tipsy by wine,
Who touched a branch not seen before by gazelles.
٤. فَدَيتُ حَبِيباً رَنَّحَ السُّكْرُ عِطْفَهُ
فَمَاسَ بِغُصْنٍ مَا رَأَتْ مِثْلَهُ الرُّبا
5. He sheds from his black lashes a radiant whiteness,
Spilling the blood of lovers, gently, drop by drop.
٥. يُجَرِّدُ مِنْ أَجْفَانِهِ السُّودِ أَبْيضَاً
أَرَاقَ دِمَا العُشَّاقِ طُرّاً وَمَانَبا
6. His cheek shone for me like a cup of wine, though it was
But the pure beauty of the radiant full moon.
٦. جَلاَ خَدُّهُ لي كَاسَ رَاحٍ وَإِنَّمَا
بِدُّرِّ اللَّمَى المَعْسُولِ حُسْناً تَحَبَّبا
7. I concealed myself from him in sickness, but when he appeared,
I emerged like the sun emerging through the haze.
٧. تَسَتَّرْتُ بِالأَسْقَامِ فِيهِ فَمُذْ بَدَاَ
ظَهَرْتُ كَمَا في الشَّمْسِ قدْ يظْهَرْ الهَبا
8. And he granted me beauty, and no wonder, for
Every beauty attains some of what he has attained.
٨. وَأَكْسَبَنِي حُسْناً وَلاَ غَرْوَ إِنَّمَا
لِكُلِّ مَليحٍ مِنْهُ مَا قَدْ تَكَسَّبا
9. Indeed, I am that enamored lover, who desires
No other but that absolute beauty he desires.
٩. وَإِنِّي لَذَاكَ المُغْرَمُ العَاشِقُ الَّذِي
إِلَى غَيْرِ ذَاكَ المُطْلَقِ الحُسْنِ مَا صَبا
10. Lightning in the blackest night flashes for him,
And showers rain on Nu'man from the highest clouds.
١٠. يُرَنِّحُهُ بِالأبْرَقِ الفَرْدِ بَارِقٌ
وَيُصْبِيْهِ فِي نَعْمَانَ مِنْ عَلْوَةٍ نَبا
11. When you wish to reveal the secrets he hides,
Speak to that eloquent one about that wise man.
١١. إِذَا رُمْتَ أَنْ تُبْدِي مَصُونَاتِ سِرِّهِ
فَحَدِّثْ بِذْاكَ الحَيِّ عَنْ ذَلِكَ الخِبا
