1. May your angels grant you support and favor
And may your kingdom endure and be perfected

2. You always strive and follow discord, attaining what
The most resolute found hard to gain

3. Either a book that relieves sadness
Or a messenger of triumph sent

4. You have in Abi Sa’d, chief of prosperity
One who augured well of you—he does not waver

5. A fine sword—you’ve tested it, refined it
Pleasing you when it prays, then rages

6. An arrow trained in the target’s stillness
Its aim made true though it be long

7. You braced it and it flew unerringly
Like a star, no hesitation or acclaim

8. Hearts were turned by it to your allegiance
Changed by it to gain your approval

9. Establishing in Iraq and the Tigris
Signs interpreted by Egypt's Nile

10. You were robed by the Caliph’s decree
In a coat that no lessening diminishes

11. You ennobled the noble—from your excellence
Poured water, proof of your eminence

12. Does Joseph gleam, his coat parti-colored,
A mare pants while the saddle-blanket slips

13. Or Solomon, laughing, relaxes
Ceilings shake and pillars quiver

14. A mounted prince or a vagrant king
For his splendor a mind swoons and minds reel

15. You appeared in the Caliph's robes
Your glory in the garb of celebration blinding

16. A robe of honor that hearts donned joyfully
Its brocades awe and magnificence

17. It scattered fresh, unwithering flags
That nearly flow with their delicacy

18. By decree none can rival its glory
Lord, You created it matchless

19. You are the honed—since exalted
No time without eddies spilling over you

20. Since the Imam shook its pillar
Gems were ignited for his kingdom, aura ablaze

21. You aided his state and so excelled
Crowned through its realm, the diadem yours

22. When time unweaves what time has woven
Entrusted with it, your twin swords—lightning pulsing

23. Through the answering clouds—quenched and sheathed
Your stirrups the Qur’an and Bible envied

24. When it crept forward, when it retreated
With its yellow sheath, your fine sword guides

25. Color of sulfur, but more yellow still
It divided the darkness between the braziers and ardors

26. And dimmed its native hue, ever vivid
Shared with you beneath your mantle—behold

27. A Yemeni blade that Gabriel draws!
You strut with the horses, deluding them

28. That minarets are for the stallions' racing
Their trailing tresses like a bride's veil

29. Fringed with the tips of lances for kohl
Battle cries ring out beneath its intellect

30. If there’s a roar, a whinny, a bray
None loved you as you loved him

31. No dawn shone but his shone more brillant
