1. If the blessed star glimmers in the east
The state of affairs speaks plainly without pretense

2. Consider a veil that had come between us
With a position loftier than the apparent summit

3. The treasury of God's secrets and mysteries
And the spring of secrets that appeared to the prudent

4. We raced the steeds of resolve in the valley of devotion
And zeal for the darkness veiled us

5. We built with what pleases the friend, so if you could see
Our ships blowing through the land

6. I transcended the peaks of lofty summits
I ascended them until I rose to the level plane

7. And I saw from the knowledge of mysteries wonders
That are too subtle to mention in the view of the aware

8. Of the ones loudly singing above the branch of arak
The bulbul of passion sings when called

9. And the supple-bodied gazelles whose softly bending necks
Poured light upon us from the full moon of desire

10. And from the melodious strings played by beautiful maidens
Of chaste contours, pure from blemish

11. And from the enchantresses blowing magic in the dark of night
Perhaps tomorrow fate will empower them

12. And they knew for certain that their breath would strike
Every heart that strayed from the path of guidance

13. I entered the tombs of the believers but found
Only the maidens and youths in the garden of bliss

14. So I said "Congratulations!" then I was rewarded eightfold
From the lowest station to the Lote Tree of the Limit

15. And the wing of doubt was clipped from the seeing eye
And the seal of musk was opened at the break of dawn

16. Oh, if only I would never see anyone in this world
That I'd be secretly pleased with unless they turned to purity

17. And when I saw knowledge forcibly arising
Upon the lofty pages I was certain of eternity

18. And I said to the honorable youths, come down
To the Furthest Mosque to the Kaaba of blood

19. And stand at the door of the Beloved and convey
The message of the one who if he wished would be and not be

20. So they stood and called out to the Beloved and his people
"Peace be upon the people of affection and loyalty

21. Peace be upon you from you if you look
With an eye leveled between those who obeyed or transgressed"

22. So the leader of the people stood up, they welcomed him
Men whose bodies settled the Highest Heaven

23. And he said, "Upon you the like of what you brought"
So the wise one of the people inclined to me and said

24. "Listen to my words, leave the secret of my wisdom
And this is my call, so respond to the one who called"
