1. I saw a great earthquake tearing
through momentous affairs I had tried to conceal

2. in an isthmus between isthmuses of fate - there emerged
its traces, and this is my present state in which appeared

3. to my beholding eye the eye of its image.
Would that my poetry could reach it!

4. Our thoughts said, above the carpet:
the movement of our spheres is enough for it.

5. If our sight of it
could pacify our thoughts when we saw it,

6. we would reconcile with it.
But the sight of it made my soul sick -

7. so I asked my God to heal it.
It healed, and I wanted to remind it

8. of what it has from me: towards it, in it.
My body stirred in its stirring

9. with a prostration for matters that do not oppose it.
