1. This anguish that I have, this restlessness,
And my outpouring of longing and burning -

2. Do not think it is for a mortal creature, for verily,
The Overseer has sway over the creature and creation.

3. So I see no one except that the eye of the Beloved
Rises up in him, though I am plunged in the depths.

4. And I see naught but diverse, variegated types -
If a platter appeared, I was heedless of the next platter.

5. So all that was of Him or will be of Him
Of troubles - it is borne on eyelids.

6. The heart recognizes it in me, though my soul is ignorant of it
For the abundant attachment it has.

7. And that is from Him, for Allah has told us
That He created man from a clot.

8. Whoever is from a clot, it is no wonder
What comes from a clot, being of one pattern.

9. Mine is steadfastness in an origin that will not separate me
And His decree in what I have of disquiet.

10. I see that I have nothing with which to communicate
To Him except that which I have of yearning.

11. And I have recited upon myself, fearing
The evil eye would strike me, Surat al-Falaq.
