1. What we have seen of His care,
Taking wealth and children away,

2. Except a Lord who never ceases
To be uniquely perfect in description.

3. The deceived one saw his paradise,
Then did not know what he witnessed.

4. He said, “I do not think that in my eternity,
This will ever perish.”

5. It was not as he imagined,
That it would remain for him forever.

6. Yet with God it remains
For the one who had believed.

7. So fancy showed him his disappointment,
And knowledge showed what was inferred.

8. So He showed him what He had promised him,
And showed him what He had warned.

9. He did not cease to be in the holiness of his paradise,
Beholding the Most High, finding fault.

10. Praising God, his Creator,
Where He did not leave a supporter for him.

11. Everyone whose inner state was good,
With the One whom in his inner self he became united.

12. He did not find, apart from his Creator,
Anyone to be united with.

13. Indeed I have a Master whom I confide in,
He does not see anything that comes to pass in vain.

14. The essence of a thing coming into being is His wisdom,
It has no judgment over Him ever.

15. The One whose mystical knowledge is hoped for
Was for me a pillar and support.

16. Mighty, He did not know, and they did not know,
Other than the One who led them with guidance.

17. So He is the Known to them,
And the One whom they will never know.
