O you who blame me, if our eyes

يا لائمي إن لم تكن عيننا

1. O you who blame me, if our eyes
Have not themselves, O you who blame me, become anxious,

١. يا لائمي إنْ لم تكن عينُنا
ذواتهم يا لائمي كن همُ

2. Not everyone who freed his breath
Is inspired by everything you have brought,

٢. ما كلُّ من حرَّر أنفاسَه
لكلِّ ما جئتَ به يلهم

3. Indeed this young man who gives advice
Clarifies what he said and does not obscure,

٣. إنَّ الفتى الناصحَ هذا الذي
يوضح ما قال ولا يُبهم

4. Indeed he who came to them with advice,
Informing and caring - if they

٤. إنَّ الذي جاءهم نصحاً
مبلغاً ومشفقاً إنْ همُ

5. Had been fit to hear what they heard,
And with us the listener is one who understands,

٥. كانوا لما قد سمعوا أهله
وعندنا السامعُ من يفهم

6. I have matched it from “h” to “m”,
And this judgment in poetry does not necessarily follow.

٦. ألزمته الهاء إلى ميمها
وحكم ذا في الشِّعر لا يلزم
