1. No tear has flowed except for the one
Whose ribs were too narrow to contain it

2. So it filled him, the agony overflowing
Beyond what any ear could bear to hear

3. Do not think your rebuke magnificent
When nothing remains to frighten him away

4. Let him plead with tears for the one
He loves—may it help his intercession!

5. And if his beloved persists in coldness
Then let him weep a lifetime of wasted years

6. And a square made ready for union but
Debarred, its gardens left to grow wild

7. Its waters turned bitter in abandonment
Its spring dried up, untrod, unpeopled

8. No wonder the abandoned longs so
His heart ever ripped by new wounds

9. For tears are not mere water
Later overflowing into laments

10. He knows well the intended is to unite
But forever out of reach, unobtainable

11. His beauty eclipses all mention of God
Though seen by most perfect eyes

12. So he clings fast to every hope
And leans always towards reunion
