1. The sickest of the singing girls' eyes is her ailment
And the loss of her beauty pains her heart

2. She sways the branches of the willow for its charm's sake
And displays from her eyelids whiteness white as eggs

3. My thoughts have long dwelled on delicate waists
With the burdens of what the robes conceal and how they bear them

4. I tease my white hair yet youthfulness
Only allures the beautiful with its coyness

5. Dark-haired beauties, lovely of face, are aloof
Their meanings perplex my mind, obscure to fathom

6. Long-haired damsels, intimate in their blackness
Pleasing white forelocks yet hateful hoary ones

7. She recoils from the ugly old man and his repulsion
Yet seeks the company of the wealthy youth for his comforts

8. It's as if the hearts of lovers are pawned to her love
Debts never paid though demands she makes

9. She enticed me at our tryst yet slyly slipped away
Like lightning flashes briefly then fades

10. Grant me patience, my tears will pour
As streams of sorrow, bitter inside me

11. Can any quench the fires of my burning pain
That blaze through all corners of my heart?

12. She lightly breaks her vows and promises
While my devotion contradicts her dismissal

13. Shall I ignore her hurtful injustice and tyranny
When my sword's edge is sharpened for borders?

14. Guide me with wisdom for paths
Are only shown by experience and overflow

15. Help me withstand my trial, for life is turbid
Full of the horrors of fate for those who dare it

16. My concerns doubled joining her, troubles aplenty
To a treacherous plan that harms the lions with mosquitoes

17. She weighs them equal, muck and cream
And destroys composer and singer alike

18. Yet I have evidence in scrutinizing meanings
That expose her lies in days of bloom

19. My fortunes upon her heights and depths
Are like verses of poetry with faulty meter

20. Frozen they may be, but my fiery resolve melts them
Wild they are, yet my patience tames them

21. Shadows may thicken misfortune's descent
But ascent shines at the height of glory

22. Through the Imam of the faithful's generosity and aid
His overflowing springs pour on the land of wishes

23. The leader of all goodness, its shining lamp
Hands gushing forth, abundant and streaming

24. His rainwaters diminish the ambitions of hopes
And for success, we anticipate their ebb and flow

25. Great in bounty, vast in merit, shaded in
Kindness, weighty in legacy, extensive its expanse

26. His hospitality replaces destitution with joy
And many a poverty made bearable by his comfort

27. His openhandedness opens wide the gates
Barred before by lines of verse poor in meter

28. When inspirations move us to praise him
His eulogies race in passion to extol him

29. Those loyal find success rewarded
While disregard earns failure and rejection

30. Delegations of gifts came with his generosity
Bearing all we hoped for and more

31. When our hopes thirst, his rivers of plenty
Quench the thirst of yearning souls

32. Of the noble clan whose loyalty
Brought abundant blessings gushing forth

33. Honored are their reputations, disgraced are those
Who expose the glory of saints to abuse

34. Loyal to God with truest intent
Washing clean sins in purification's pools

35. They lift veils in every strait and trial
Except the claws of lurking fates

36. The east and west shone with their light
As their realm encompassed length and breadth

37. A wondrous thing, their enemies bowed
Their heads to the awe their might evokes

38. Their joints prostrating hint the terror
In their hearts, so contrary in nature

39. No weeping pilgrim in holy grounds
But smiles seen in Medina's courtyards

40. Its valleys and breezes delighted
Its groves sing and thickets trill

41. With greater generosity than the Imam's
Whose aid cures the hopeful when ill

42. He blessed me despite fate's disfavor
Sweetening my life's bitterness and gall

43. My hopes took wing and people abandoned hope
While mine strained the limits and pushed all bounds

44. To you, Prince of the Faithful, I drive them
Rushing emaciated steeds urged on

45. Seeking of hopes the vanguard, processions of wants
Crowding in hardship's jostling throngs

46. Pregnant with success should their birth go well
Not fail delivery nor luck go wrong

47. If fates prevent me reaching your abode
And duties hinder my journey along

48. Wherever in obedient service I stand
No obligations stand without your command

49. I will seek my Lord at your oceans' shore
And abandon a people whose pastures left me long parched
