1. I seek refuge in You, O Most Virtuous One, from that which disgraces,
And O Most Glorious One from that which befits not the glorious.

2. You single me out for reproach, not the group,
And single Yourself out from responding or answering me.

3. Among the turns of fate is that I suffer,
With no power over resolving matters or contracts.

4. When I have no might in times of tribulation,
My palm bears no honorable deed.

5. And if I do not fulfil the rights of the reverent,
Then who after me can fulfil their rights?

6. If I were granted my request from on high,
I would reveal the secrets it hides.

7. I am not content today with what I am,
But from the Sublime Ones I set out upon a promise.

8. Through my waiting for the fulfillment of promises,
Made to me, and days when swords remain sheathed.

9. I will resolutely journey, as the glorious do,
Toward a destination I aim for.

10. The Indian has not surpassed in relics and worth,
Thefrontiers of the antelope, however far India extends.

11. Those who blamed the Sublime Ones wronged them,
Though they arepeople of praise, of glory, and perfection.

12. O my noble friend, your might has singled out
Reproach for one who hopes in you for bounty.

13. So convey to him from me a reproach, perhaps
He willreproach or relent regarding the turns of fate.

14. His pure efforts shine, so all who desire bliss
Are guided by them.

15. While I exhaust myself reproaching the likes of me,
In praising him I have always exhausted my efforts.

16. I sipped the cup of reproach bitter, though
Your love to me was sweeter than honey.

17. My esteem for true friendship with you
Did not belie my hopes of continuity.

18. Is it justice that intimacy is granted to a foe,
While estrangement is my lot, and the bond exclusively mine?

19. Abu Umar, my heart filled with love of you,
Would you destroy a structure I built from love?

20. Consider my account, then enumerate my merits,
Their total will inform you of my worth.

21. The market of all merits is obstructed,
While frivolity in this age has prospered over seriousness.

22. I see none but a noble one who flees
A wretch, and a free man who complains of oppression by a slave.

23. I have no refuge and hope in the minister’s shade and view,
Whether near or far.

24. My fortune has paled during its flow, and I
Am one whose obscured glory is not obscured.

25. I am confined by his kindness’ confinement,
And confinement and number cannot contain kindness.

26. His beneficence to me exceeds all limits,
And my gratitude to him exceeds the limits.
