1. My tender love continuously yearns for union
The sickness in his eyes reflects the sickness in mine

2. His gaze is languid due to my patience
His green complexion reflects my emaciated body

3. My lips have not tasted the sweetness of his mouth
If his lips would generously grant me a kiss

4. The beauty of his cheeks is excellently composed
A beautifully woven, gloriously pictured, moon-like face

5. Surrounded by an aura of shyness
With a blush of modesty and fine down

6. Both enhancing his beauty, each complementing the other
His sun-like cheeks dotted with moles

7. Forming stars that accentuate his beauty
The ornaments around his neck have dissolved

8. Into firm covenants, binding my love
His figure is eloquently formed

9. His posture leans towards reconciliation
His nature is violently inclined to war

10. Yet his grace leans towards peace
Why does he so unjustly bar my union?

11. My pleading heart blocked from my beloved’s injustice
If he would untie the knot of our separation

12. I would not object, surrendering to his decree
I ponder on his pride and my humility

13. And in both conditions, I am utterly confused
The glow of his face brings tears to my eyes

14. That melt my heart as it madly yearns
When my tears flow from my eyelids

15. My hidden love is revealed despite my efforts
If you wish for my wellbeing, leave me be

16. To my passion and my fanciful notions
Let my eyes witness my beloved, and bear witness

17. That his love consumes my soul and obsesses my thoughts
You reproach me, igniting the fires of love, tell me

18. Are you my counselor or my adversary?
I'm not bothered by blame, for blame is only

19. Hurtful words, more bitter than speech
Oh full moon, shine your rays on my gloomy night

20. Dispersing the clouds of sorrow
Be gentle, you were once afflicted by troubles

21. A noble son joined to a noble daughter
Soothe me with affection and overwhelm

22. The army of anguish with defeat
Let your acceptance be fruits of reconciliation

23. Quenching my thirst like milk from the nipple
The sweetness of your lips is refreshing wine

24. Sating the yearnings of my soul as I compose this ode
Cure my sickness with the wine of your mouth

25. An antidote to all poison
Smile at me with your enchanting dimples

26. And pluck for me a blossom I may smell
Dazzle me with your radiant cheeks

27. And gather for me a rose I may kiss
Oh you who deprive me of the joys of union

28. Denying me my share, parting us with separation
Oh you who unjustly assault me with rejection

29. Do not stain me with my blood, taking my soul
Oh archer, who aims his bow at my demise

30. Drawing the bowstring, intent on destroying me
With your eyes and brows you make me forget

31. All other bows and arrows
Oh would that I were in Iraq, reveling in bliss

32. Thankful for the joys of union
I cast amorous glances, and she casts back at my heart

33. Arrows with each flirtatious look
One morning I gathered singing girls around me

34. The most melodious of singers
Days above the sky were under my command

35. Fulfilling my wishes, ruling as I desired
Days when my guarded innocence could flow freely

36. No shame in lavishing it on a beloved
I kissed pure white cheeks

37. Eyes that pierce hearts
And shared goblets of wine with boon companions

38. The noblest of the generous
Passion began weaving wisdom in us

39. Sense for every fool
We inhaled the scent of youth wafting on the breeze

40. Kisses sweeter than wine mixed with pure musk
Under the influence of desire we removed the necklaces

41. Of reason, minds utterly engrossed
Nights of union were flowers

42. Transformed by intimacy into fruits
My black hair since streaked with grey

43. Like fire sparked amidst embers
Thoughts of my lengthy life

44. Increase my sorrows and regrets
Long I endured the wildness of my fate

45. But its harshness would not bend to my will
None contend with time but me

46. It is as if my superiority is a crime to it
I restrain my anger, for it is not my way

47. To suppress the anger of events
Oh my gloomy fate, lessen your darkness

48. You cannot completely darken me
I have found refuge with the Most Merciful

49. I seek His sanctuary, He will protect me
With the Most Majestic, Most Sought

50. To remove strife and end the crisis
The Most Virtuous, Most Excellent, Most Sublime

51. Most Favored, Most Noble
My patron of bounty and generosity

52. None views generosity as an obligation but him
A rain of aid, a sea of generosity

53. The epitome of knowledge, the essence of wisdom
With a resolute determination, intent on honor

54. Leading glory with the bridle
Intellect of stellar brilliance, vast capacity

55. Lengthy experience, pleasant charm
Balanced opinion, beautiful countenance

56. Neither brash nor easily offended
The best of qualities are evident in his fair judgment

57. Dispelling all injustice and wrongdoing
My master who has granted me every favor

58. And deserves all my gratitude in return
None built a legacy like my patron

59. He harnessed glory, sparing none
He excels in craft and is prolific in pottery

60. Vast formations built up from the smallest pieces
His gifts bring relief from affliction

61. Freeing the captive, providing for the orphan
He pays heed in matters of state

62. Extracting precious pearls from rough exteriors
He is a sword that leaves no ailment

63. Without assigning it a decisive remedy
He reaps the harvest of each field

64. Saving all those afflicted with wounds
He trains and schools the young

65. With clouds of generosity raining gifts upon them
His lines of poetry are stars in the firmament

66. Setting gloriously though they seem to disappear
If good fortune comes, it is a star of joy

67. If misfortune comes, it is a star of exile
His pens have accomplished great deeds

68. Victorious with each pen stroke
How many banners of wise policy

69. His resolute will supported and upheld
Hearing and obeying his command

70. Whether gentle or stern in his address
His hand supports the patron

71. Patron, steadfast, strong resolve
Clouds incessantly pouring down

72. On every plain and mountain pass
Swaying like a well-trained steed in its gait

73. Swaying with natural rhythm and poise
Weaving the raiment of spring itself

74. Broidered tapestries over inclines
More abundant than his generosity and eloquence

75. Is my wonder, leaving me speechless
My lord, you see my condition

76. Deprived of fortune, overwhelmed with concerns
My debts are unpaid, and with each passing day

77. My worldly creditor increasingly insists
My family resides in Damascus

78. In a city whose heat is scorching
Their hardship has been prolonged, so lengthen

79. Your lofty column to extend to them
I came to Egypt full of hope

80. For your plentiful gifts to shower upon me
My aim was fulfilled, my matter concluded

81. My success apparent, my hopes attained
Indeed, I found my ecstasy in you

82. As I had lacked all felicity before
You revived me when fate caused me to stumble

83. So you earned my praise and my composition
I have lofty aspirations deferred by time

84. But time cannot defer its promises to me
The fruits of success, through you, determine

85. That the promises will not go unfulfilled
All my hopes, I see their attainment

86. From you, judiciously and knowingly
Paying my debts, attaining my goals

87. Keeping my station, following my way
And a livelihood where my resolves

88. Are neither wasted nor loses profit
And an eminence illuminated

89. By the good fortune of my destiny
I aspired to a purpose but would not be pleased

90. With makeshift solutions for my purpose
Why has my hope not been coupled with success?

91. Why does my dishevelment lack care?
Take up the matter of my affairs, and remedy my condition

92. None so generous in creation as you
Adorn my inadequate means with every fine quality

93. And increase my station without reserve
The realization of virtue equals my share

94. And the mediator of honor is the letter of determination
Not to mention the whispering critic

95. Who whispers about the whispered critic
May every wicked, hostile enemy

96. Be disgraced amongst the people, fully discredited
The forces of enemies and villains

97. Rendered between withering and insult
You attained honor without exertion

98. And reached sovereign rule without conflict
I made it the sole focus of my thoughts

99. A refreshing originality of my imagination
I presented it to Jesus, and it emerged

100. As the murmuring flow of a fountain
With your copious sea and waves, wash away

101. The contamination in its composition and prose
I have an unrefined notion in my mind

102. I sculpt it from the essence of my being
I approach aspiring, though awed

103. By your tremendous, towering glory
I make the pilgrimage to you, O Kaaba of Sublimity

104. With the humble devotion of a pilgrim
Help my imagination grasp the extent of my stature

105. And strengthen my poetry despite its weakness
Through your magnanimous pardon, the fault of my failing

106. Appears not as a crime
With your name, in gratitude, intended blessings

107. From me, presented in my name
Bestow your utmost favor upon me, and grant me distinction

108. Articulating meanings my words cannot grasp
As long as you support me, the beauty of my poetry

109. Will never appear ugly or blemished
