Putting to shame the gazelle and deer.
١. وأَحور يسبي بطرفٍ يكل
وتخجلُ منه الظُّبا والظباءْ
2. In his cheeks, such beauty and youth,
Fire and water combined, conflict clear.
٢. بخدَّيه من حسنهِ والشّباب
تجمّعَ ضدّان نار وماءْ
3. In his languid eyes that wide awake,
Illness recovered, health full and sheer.
٣. وفي مقلتيهِ وقد صَحّتا
كما صَحَا سقمٌ وانتشاءْ
4. I restrained my love, self-respect intact,
Equalling his disdain and my desire.
٤. عَفَفْتُ وعفتُ الحيا في هوا
هُ حتى استوى صدُّهُ واللقاءْ
5. All modesty that would protect one's love,
Must itself be shielded, that's only fair.
٥. وكلُّ حياءٍ يذودُ العفا
ف عن ودِّه فعليه العفاءْ
