1. My son, due to my poor guidance
followed misguidance, deviating from his forefathers.
١. مولايَ لي ولدٌ لسوء تصرفي
تبع الضلال وشذَّ عن آبائهِ
2. I neglected him as a child, so when he grew up
I did not watch over him until he indulged in his whims.
٢. أهملتُهُ طفلاً فلمَّا شبَّ لم
ارعهُ حتى خاضَ في غلوائِهِ
3. And there an eye, when his eye saw it
spun for him with a glance the thread of his misery.
٣. وهناك عينُ مذ رأتها عينُهُ
غزلت له باللحظ خيطَ شقائِهِ
4. And the messengers of love are eyes, so if they call
a heart that obeys the raving in its passions.
٤. وروائد الحبّ العيون فإِن دعت
قلباً أطاعَ فهام في أهوائهِ
5. And love is an illness of hearts when it grows
it blinds Hippocrates' path to its remedies.
٥. والحبُّ داءٌ للقلوب إِذا نما
أعيى على بقراط نهج دوائِهِ
6. She is Ghada. If the full moon smelled her
it would hasten to her from the heights of its orbit.
٦. هي غادةُ لو شامها بدرُ الدُجى
لسعى إليها من ذرى عليائِهِ
7. So Ferdinand loved her, and she matched him
in love, striving to please him.
٧. فأحبها فرنند وهي نظيره
في الحب ساعيةٌ إلى إرضائِهِ
8. They corresponded secretly, and she had a father
whose kindness was among his enemies.
٨. فتراسلا سراً وكان لها أَبٌ
اللطفُ والاحسانُ من أَعدائِهِ
9. Due to their bad luck he uncovered the secret
which they were extremely careful to conceal.
٩. فلسوءِ حظهما درى السر الذي
قد بالغا حرصاً على إِخفائِهِ
10. His sharpness stormed over him, as
the fury of fire raged in his entrails.
١٠. عصفَت به إذ ذاك حدته وقد
هاجت هياج النار في أَحشائِهِ
11. He gave his son a sword and said, "Kill Ferdinand with it
and wash away our shame with his blood."
١١. أَعطى ابنهُ سيفاً وقال اقتل به
فرنند واغسل عارنا بدمائِهِ
12. So they fought a duel, but my son was bested
since that opponent was not one of his peers.

ما كان ذاك الخصم من اكفائِهِ
