1. This is a story of a breeze that blew
In days of yore and times gone by

2. Written in an ancient book of magic
Penned by the thoughts of a devilish sorcerer

3. None could grasp its meaning
Except a poet well-versed in subtlety of meaning

4. Poetry was found when magic was found
Two brothers never to part or separate

5. It's said this breeze once walked
On the hills of Lebanon wandering aimlessly

6. Restless, moving from place to place
At times kissing flowers, at others

7. Tossing in the bosom of branches
When he came upon the old home of a revered Elder

8. He burst in unannounced in great haste
Where a girl sat spinning wool

9. Safe from impropriety, her hands weaving magic and love
The impudent visitor ruffled her soft hair

10. And golden strands fell over dark lashes and cheeks as red as blood
The breeze saw a beauty he had never before seen in a human

11. And so began staring at her, bewildered as a lovestruck youth
This fickle, weightless being, so inconsistent in all affairs

12. Who reveals lovers' secrets to all gossips and rumor-mongers
Became completely smitten with the Elder's daughter

13. Hopelessly in love, content just to see her at all times
Wherever she was, inside the house or in the garden amid narcissi and basil

14. His only care was to see her happy, blissful and safe
Making himself cold when she felt cold, hot when she felt hot

15. Changing with the seasons however they transitioned
When night fell in the icy grip of winter

16. He came to her as a gentle, mild, lukewarm breeze
When the day was sweltering as if aflame

17. He blew from the mountain peaks reviving body and soul
When he sensed her slightest discomfort

18. He rushed off to the orchards to bring her
The sweetest-voiced birds with the loveliest songs and melodies

19. When the season turned to autumn
The garden faded like a gloomy face

20. Her room empty of roses, narcissi, and lavender
He followed the butterfly through the fields gathering flowers

21. As bouquets as lovely as any garden’s
Of carnelian, lapis lazuli, jasmine, amber, and white as pearls

22. Birds with bright wings like mirrors flocked to her casement
When she had a book in hand

23. That needed careful study before turning the page
He would blow and flip the page

24. Saving her the effort of wetting her fingers
And how often he lingered there

25. When drowsiness overtook her, shutting her eyelids
Revealing the beauty of her wrists above her heaving breast

26. He would slide back the curtain and bring his lips
Near hers to drink his fill while she in slumber felt no shame

27. For so long he lived consumed by his passion for her
His heart tranquil, free of worries or cares

28. Believing joy was meant to last forever
But is that possible in an uncertain world?

29. Farewell love, O breeze, for you now have a rival
Who comes to ask for the maid's hand, the fool of all youths

30. With no virtues but overflowing riches
Tempted by jewels, as women have always been

31. She accepted him as husband, and the true lover is left in despair
Alas, that worldly wealth beats affection every time

32. However gentle the breeze, however fragrant its breath
What can it do without riches and glittering jewels?

33. My heart burns for him rejected and disgraced
After glory, now condemned to dishonor and shame

34. Standing at her window, lamenting piteously as if torn by loss
Cooing mournfully like a dove, hissing like snakes

35. And how a malicious spirit whispers to him
Though before he never dealt in wickedness

36. Inciting him to rage and destroy her home with a storm
As the wedding hour drew near he approached the church bent on ruin

37. Patience gone, his wrath raged like a lion's
Stirring up dust that blinded every eye

38. He swept through extinguishing the candles in sacrilege
With no respect for the sanctity of the place

39. In creased fury he drained the chalices till nothing remained for the sacrament
The bell ringer, shocked, sounded the bells of sorrow

40. But all this succeeded in nothing, the wedding proceeded despite the chaos
The bitter hatred boiled in his breast like a volcano

41. As he roamed howling, beseeching the winds for support but finding none
Amid hurricanes, gales, whirlwinds and poisonous storms

42. Years later he came with an army swirling like a deluge
Spreading terror, turning children's hair gray with fear

43. Leaving destruction in his wake, glorying in the death of civilization
He reached her house thinking to blow it sky-high like smoke

44. But instead saw a cradle with a crying baby
And by the cradle his mother, racked by tremors of fear

45. His strength gave way, and love triumphed over hatred, for love rules all
He fell by her child and flung himself into the cradle, rocking it like a lad
