1. I remember when in Egypt we were recalled
And days in history that were great

2. When the meadow of youth was fresh and elegant
And times of purity flowed gently by

3. When we squandered our youth recklessly
Heedless of the bitter or sweet consequences

4. When misfortunes befell, we evaded them
Our only weapons courtesy and poverty

5. If I composed poetry, poetry answered back
If I wrote prose, prose answered in kind
