1. The astonished expressed astonishment at his state of astonishment
He finds his head aflame while he plays

2. Does he want to be struck again after his cheeks have whitened?
So it is fitting for the elder to be struck with a tambourine!

3. Has not the time come for modesty to be a scolder?
Yes, the time has come for modesty to be a scolder

4. And whoever does not remove the white hair of separation is mad
Blaming him is more fitting and appropriate

5. Tell me what you have gained from the world
For you have tasted from it what is bitter and painful

6. Was it anything but an illusion that disappeared,
Clouds, lightning after rain has passed

7. You are lost in blindness going and coming back
Rising up in its darkness and descending

8. Challenging in disobedience the One able over you
While you turn about in His signs

9. You thought man on earth was incapable
Your soul has lied to you and the soul lies

10. Procrastination has pleased you in a strait
On the edge of a pit, soon to be erected

11. By my life, death is indeed near
Though from the field of old age it is nearer

12. And the scales of death clank unnoticed
And if it is hard, what comes after is harder

13. Seize the injustice of time before it shrinks
Except plunder it before you are plundered

14. Take the initiative, for time is too short for caprice
Bet seriously, not wavering with the stake

15. And take for meeting God whatever preparations you can
For there is no fleeing the meeting with God

16. And if you are distressed by the immensity of what has passed
Do not forget God’s pardon, for pardon is vastest

17. Take pleasure in the side of the Opener, the Sealer
In whom the apprehensive hopeful takes comfort

18. He is the Requiter, the Effacer in whom
The sun of His light rose over the universe, never to set

19. To Him belong manifest brilliance and the rank
Which no intimate angel reached as He ascended

20. The noble messengers singled Him out with love
And if they mention Him, He is the precious, the splendid

21. If events speak clearly, call on Him
You will find the best neighbor in adversities lamenting

22. And if calamities sting you, cure them through Him
For He is the tried antidote to poisons

23. Through Him worries are uncovered, harm is repelled
By Him, illness is cured, cracks are repaired

24. To you, Messenger of God, he has come imploring
A brother of stumbling, hoping for lenience, a sinner

25. For your door is God’s door, no other path leads away
And one who seeks it other than your door is barred

26. We have no bounty from the bestowal of God
Except through your efforts it is obtained

27. No adversity has touched us, no fortune has favored us
Except by your right hand it is removed

28. Help me, save me, favor me, for if
Your kindness relaxes from me, I am undone

29. A drowner in sins, fortune betrayed me so it transgressed
Battered by the surging waves, floating and sinking

30. Sins that invalidate excuses, so fear prevails
But my hope in You prevails over it

31. The furthest thing is for Your magnificent intercession through us
To narrow, for it is the most expansive

32. When You stand at the promised station, we
Are confident that we will not be deprived

33. Has not the All-Merciful been pleased with you in Surat Ad-Duha
And it is far from You to be pleased while we suffer

34. Are You pleased with great status while we are lost
Though to the threshold of Your door we trace our lineage?

35. Are You pleased with abundant honor while You see
Your praised standing while we suffer?

36. Do You let down, O Protector of the refuge, a party
Who by Your guidance professed no other doctrine?

37. We called You, so we responded obediently
It is far from You that we call then You disappoint

38. That I have been emboldened, the excuse is clear
If favor increases, courtesy decreases

39. And tongues fall short in praising You
And if praisers speak at length in praising You

40. Are You not peerless in favor? So who do we have
To compose unmatched beauty in praising You?

41. What can the likes of me construct in mentioning one whose
Praises in mention are recited and recorded?

42. But my inadequacy drove me to have in praising You
A strike in glory that is noted

43. Upon you, may God send blessings, looking upon a Muslim
Together with family and companions whenever a cloud rains

44. Blessings matching Your essence’s loftiness
In delivering them to God, I most hope
