1. The mention of the beautiful maid made my ribs ache in longing
And the ruby wept so my tears fell

2. Praise God for my tears, they
Fell from my eyelids in the best place

3. If only I had my heart the day I bid them farewell
If only they recreated my heart with me

4. They left and my heart was the first to leave
Patience the last to wander and bid farewell

5. Please, O resting place, return to me
Perhaps the guest of apparition will visit my bed

6. If the youth’s stick disobeys, do not obey desire
I see you when the return is near

7. And perhaps a night whose beginning I spent awake
Since they bid farewell, my eyes have not slept

8. I stay up watching the stars, keeping vigil
Like a gazelle wary of the darkness at dusk

9. Tell those who fault out of ignorance
The dead youth cannot awaken or understand

10. By God, if they cut my heart with swords of separation
I will not cease my hopes for them

11. Their lives are predestined and their treatment deserved
My love for them is inherent without affectation

12. O neighbor of estrangement, after affection
Nothing equals tears after you

13. Return, O guide, if one day
You pass by al-Ghuwayr and cause a commotion

14. Let the bell ring news from the loved ones’ abodes
Greet me peace and speak at length

15. Stop at Sulu’, then al-‘Adhayb, then Barraq
Then al-Riqmatayn, then Hajar, then al-Ajru‘

16. Promise you’ll recount words of the dwellers of the abode
How delightful, your words are to my hearing

17. When will their tents on the hillside appear
Among those pastures, the most delightful refuge

18. I see the domes of Quba appear and say “O eye
I behold the noble sanctuary and spot

19. Containing the most generous intercessor
He is the hidden treasure wherein are gathered

20. The paths of guidance, what a place to seek sanctuary
The one whose palm the fate was etched

21. And from it water flowed, fresh and pure
Upon the ground, oceans poured from it

22. More abundant than any sea from a finger
The moon split for his sake and the sun

23. Turned back, a sign like the one for Joshua
For him the staff since that time has borne fruit

24. Clusters falling, harvest of the honored place
For him the banner of praise is erected tomorrow

25. For none other has that banner been raised
He whose basin in the Resurrection

26. Circumambulated with each cup passed around
He whose law superseded previous creeds

27. With forearms white and dark, lofty branches
Who destroyed the idolators at Uhud and Badr

28. Where they met their terrible fate
Who protected the sanctuary of Islam the feared day

29. In white shrouds, each lion made timid
Above every firm hill a swimmer

30. Playing with the four winds like lightning
How many tumultuous seas of war they traversed

31. Between a rugged descent and a sheer cliff
Each lion in battle, masked

32. And armed, brandishing weapons, armored
Competing to the basin of death like racers

33. To the blooming meadow’s flowers
Fearing no stab but finding it

34. Like a needle prick to one in pain
They made the cave of lions their dwelling

35. And preyed on all guarded goods
You see them pounce like angry lions

36. In the fray, and pounce like lynxes too
They crave the clashing of swords

37. When fortunes change, their swords untried
They do not pursue fleers, yet

38. They are fiercer in war than hunting beasts
A people who attained the highest glory

39. And encompassed the loftiest position
Rejoicing in the rising of its full moon while they

40. Encircle it like stars at dawn
He from the overflowing grace of his right hand

41. Grants drinks to visitors, wealthy and poor
O master of honored messengers, most eminent and lofty

42. Accept this longing's greeting that reached you
And this gift from the imploring one

43. With you, Ibn Malik grew confident
May he be safe from the horror of that terror

44. With praising you, I hope on Judgment Day
To gain deliverance and a graceful rising

45. May God bless you, O guide to righteousness
As long as a meadow blows musk-scented breeze

46. And the kinsfolk and companions whose ending
Crowns beautifully and perfectly concludes
