1. The dove is cooing on the myrtle branches,
Revealing the passion of a lovelorn, infatuated one.

2. Since it sang out at dawn, it seems
It has lost its beloved and its pleasures.

3. It's as though it conveys a sign to me—
How long can I be patient since my companions left?

4. Yet by God, since they left me,
My life has not tasted sweet, nor has time been kind.

5. But I am stoic, hiding my yearning,
As if I am not so full of longing.

6. Yet in my heart’s core there’s a fire—
If its embers appeared, none could bear its heat.

7. I weep blood from my entrails from missing them,
Yet I wish that my eyes would not show it.

8. I have my own way of loving them, and my own creed,
And lovers’ creeds differ when declared.

9. What's it to me if I conceal my passion
Even if death lies in concealment?

10. How beautiful are those slain by the spearheads of fidelity!
How sweet is sorrow with the tender gazelles!

11. They said, “You're infatuated!” and infatuation clothes the youth
Forever in the garb of humiliation and disgrace.

12. I answered them, “If this be true, I choose
This humiliation to endure for all my years.”

13. Humiliation for lovers is no dishonor;
Rather, it is the core of all honor for the passionate.

14. I yearn toward one who has attained high spirit,
Who sways unsteadily on the myrtle branch.

15. I incline toward a charming cheek on which
Anemones have slept, making it red.

16. The innocence of my eyelids forever pleases me
In the beauty of the face of a bewitching charmer.

17. Morn and eve I dwell among disheveled hair
And a shining face—that is how the beautiful are.

18. Often have I spent an era with him
While Egypt's breeze makes the plains fragrant.

19. I have a claim on Egypt for which I'd sacrifice myself,
An undeniable claim that merits no denial.

20. If my eyes matched its Nile in abundance,
Some of its healing would not suffice for my sorrows.

21. Or if my heart narrated its seas of knowledge—
Enraptured, it would not be without palpitations.

22. Its Azhar has shining suns that have risen
And illuminated the cosmos with faith.

23. The fragrance of their knowledge has spread among all people,
And their glories have reached every place.

24. Egypt embraced them, becoming thereby a garden,
And they are its paradise-dwellers sought by the passionate.

25. They compared it to a bride, and its wedding
Brought joy to the universe manifestly.

26. When they said its garden breathes sweet scent,
I replied: Its perfume is the beauty of its meanings.

27. An inkwell possessing whose mastery
The greatest of the age attested to openly.

28. If you said, “Can the like of him be found in Egypt?”
I would answer, acknowledging this and professing it.

29. By my life, it has today eminent men
Adorned with beauty and benevolence.

30. O hidden one, its pride is yours!
To you belong its finest testaments.

31. If I swore Egypt is a paradise
Whose fruits are for the winners to pluck—

32. The Nile is its pure river whose drink
Quenches every oath I utter—

33. It fully deserves to take pride,
Especially in its origin as an Uthmanic state.

34. It gained praiseworthy traits when named after Muhammad,
And ascended to the peak, over all peers.

35. Of any ideal, our Prince is its counterpart—
An Alexander or Chosroes Anushirvan.

36. On his face victory over enemies is revealed.
Its signs shine for all meanings.

37. In his grip are two swords: the sword of divine support,
And the valiant, Abraham’s sword is the second.

38. Ask him, and the Hejaz will tell you firsthand
Of the ruin of the people of sin and calumny.

39. Before, its paths were frightened,
And now they are fully safe.

40. No wonder Najd keeps thanking him,
For he has clothed it in the garb of faith.

41. The vanguards of his army have reached Zanzibar,
And the disobedient one from Sudan has obeyed.

42. The vicissitudes of fate are proof
Of the many who have suffered its sharp blades,

43. To the extent that they have tasted ample disgrace
And shared in loss and deprivation.

44. The height of his spear does not miss its targets,
And to hit one's target is to attain one's wishes.

45. Through his state sciences that have become
Luminous to the minds due to his clarity have been revived.

46. A hero whose magnificent traits
Have adorned the neck of Time with bejeweled crowns.

47. Congratulations, O Egypt! Indeed, Bahā
Has fallen for Muhammad Pasha.

48. So pride yourself on his abundant wisdom and favor,
And thereby take pride over all other lands.

49. Extend your thanks profusely and pray
That his Master let him live long.
