1. He averted his aim from the hard breastplate,
launching arrows that outstripped all gazes.
١. وأَحْوى رَمى عَنْ قِسِّيِّ الحَوَرْ
سِهاماً يُفَوِّقُهُنَّ النظرْ
2. They say his cheek was cloven in twain -
yet the graven trace of his beauty remains.
٢. يقولون وَجْنَتُهُ قُسِّمتْ
فرسمُ محاسِنِهِ قد دُثِر
3. No wanton hand slit that cheek of his;
nay, it was a sign for mortal men.
٣. وما شقَّ وجنتَه عابثٌ
ولكنّها آيةٌ للبشر
4. God split it, that we might look therein
and see how the moon was rent in sunder.
٤. جلاها لنا اللهُ كيما نرى
بها كيفَ كان انْشِقاقُ القمر
