1. The promise of loyalty has refused me constancy,
And yearning without solace has occupied me.

2. I sat requesting union,
When before I had been most aloof.

3. Yet I conceal the passion of love,
And from you I hide it, so great is my estrangement.

4. Like one who blows the trumpet in secret,
And beats the drums beneath his cloak.

5. So O my heart, be resolute,
If you wish to attain deliverance when lost.

6. And be not foolishly weak-willed,
If hostility transgresses against you.

7. Ask the hostile one to keep faith,
And cure estrangement by keeping loyalties.

8. For more painful than bearing the reproach of reconciliation,
Is the loss of affection and severing of ties.

9. So listen to your love, and be gentle,
For gentleness is the best cure for love.
